PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The Organic Farming Certificate Program is a one-year, plus an internship, program designed to train people to be organic farmers. This program consists of 44 credits of on campus coursework and hands on practical farm training at the 10-acre Student Organic Farm. The Student Organic Farm runs a 48-week CSA program (Community Supported Agriculture) and an on-campus farm stand. The farm grows over 70 different crops - vegetables, herbs, small fruit and flowers for cut flowers production. The OFCP runs from January through December and then students are placed in an internship of their choice. The program is a good option for the following people: 1) Students Interested in Sustainable and Organic Agriculture: Students interested in organic farming, sustainability, environmental science, environmental/experiential education, agroecology, and other related careers. 2) Current and New Adult Farmers: Farmers seeking classes and experience in organic farming; farmers who are considering converting to organic or restructuring their operations around direct marketing of local vegetable, fruits and flowers; farmers wishing to expand their business by doing season extension. 3) Urban and Community Farmers and Gardeners, Educators: People seeking to contribute to personal, local and national food security by developing a less centralized food system; educators wanting to incorporate organic and sustainable food system topics into their programs. Program Goal The Organic Farming Certificate program is committed to successfully preparing graduates to operate their own farm or community food system endeavor. Graduates will be qualified to a run small-scale farm, work closely with existing farmers, and be advocates of local food systems. ANY QUESTIONS?
