Libraries

Michigan State University's library collection of more than four million volumes and 20,000 periodical titles is readily accessible to all students at convenient hours. The Main Library houses the majority of the collection; 14 branch libraries located throughout the campus concentrate on specialized topics. Library tours and workshops acquaint new users with the array of materials available, including microforms, CD-ROMS, and maps. Reference librarians can find quick facts and statistics or help you begin a research project or class assignment.

Computer Center

MSU's microcomputer laboratories and network connections put you in the driver's seat on the Information Superhighway. All students have network accounts that give them access to electronic mail and the vast resources of the Internet. Fully equipped microcomputer labs are located in the Computer Center, the MSU Union, and the Main Library, as well as in many classroom buildings and residence halls. The labs house more than 2,000 systems, including Macintosh, Windows, and Unix-based computers. Informal classes on word processing, spreadsheet, and graphic design software are also offered.

Learning Resource Center

The Learning Resource Center (LRC) offers individualized, self-paced assistance to any MSU student who wants to improve study skills. The LRC Skill Lab features computer programs, audiotapes, videotapes, and written material on a broad range of topics, including time management, listening and note-taking techniques, and test-taking strategies. Workshops on specific study skills and free tutoring services are offered throughout the year.

Office of Supportive Services

The Office of Supportive Services offers tutorial assistance, academic advising, personal planning, career guidance, faculty assistance, and skills enrichment workshops that can help you succeed in the university environment. Its programs help College Achievement Admissions Program (CAAP) students and others who, for diverse reasons, do not feel completely prepared for the challenges of university study.

Writing Center

In the Writing Center, experienced writing consultants are available to talk with student writers at all levels of proficiency and at all stages of the composition process. Students meet one-on-one with writing consultants to brainstorm topics, organize ideas, work on rough drafts, or polish final drafts. Students are asked to call for an appointment but are also welcome on a first-come, first-served basis.

Career Services and Placement

Career Services and Placement offers comprehensive resources that assist students in the consideration, selection, and pursuit of a career upon graduation. From individual advising to workshops on job campaign strategies, rJsumJ writing, and interviewing, staff members help students gain the skills needed to obtain career-related employment. The Career Development Center provides career assessment material, college and university catalogs, employer literature, and annual reports on employment, hiring trends, and salary levels in business, industry, government, and education.

The Student Employment Office helps students find part-time and summer jobs. It organizes an employment fair each February, when employers from business, industry, camps, and resorts interview MSU students for season positions.

Service-Learning Center

The Service-Learning Center provides students with an array of service opportunities, matching student interest with community need. Students can explore career options, develop leadership skills, and help solve pressing societal problems. They can participate in a variety of settings, from hospitals and soup kitchens to museums, retirement homes, and government offices. They can provide direct services to youth, assist non-profit organizations with administrative support, serve as advocates or mentors, conduct research, and help develop public policy. Many service-learning placements are integrated with university courses; all enhance the undergraduate experience.
