Elementary School

Every parent knows that getting children excited about learning starts at a very young age. The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR) is a natural fit for teaching children about their surroundings. Whether it’s the food they eat, the air they breathe or the park where they play, agriculture and natural resources are involved every step of the way.

The following is a list of annual events involving our youngest Spartans. Click the links to find out the dates for this year’s events:

Grandparents University

This program is a unique three-day summer camp for kids and their grandparents (or other favorite relatives). Kids get to experience college life by bunking in a dorm and attending age-appropriate classes of their choosing, all taught by real CANR professors. Last year, classes offered ranged from “Where Does Milk Come From?” to “Exploring the Universe.”

Ag Expo

With more than 16,000 people in attendance, we know there are a lot of kids roaming around this event! CANR sponsors a tent where kids can learn about wind energy, how to milk a cow, pet animals and do some crafting.

Michigan 4-H Children’s Garden

Open in the warmer months, the 4-H Children’s Garden is a place where plants, kids and imagination come together. Bright design and kid-friendly plantings characterize this garden, which sometimes hosts events and guided tours.

MSU Bug House

Like creepy crawlies? The MSU Bug House houses insects galore, and is open for tours on Mondays during the school year from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. or for group tours. The Entomology program and the bug house also offer Insect World and Bug Camp, two annual summer programs that get great reviews.

MSU Dairy Store

The Dairy Store, with locations in Anthony Hall and the MSU Union, has tasty treats for kids of all ages. Check out the selection for changing flavors; in the past we’ve had flavors inspired by 4-H and Odyssey of the Mind groups!

4-H

Did you know that MSU Extension supports 4-H clubs statewide? These clubs help youth aged 5 to 19 learn and develop through informal and experiential hands-on learning opportunities that help them to succeed in becoming confident leaders, public speakers, communicators, students, entrepreneurs, teachers, citizens, scientists, environmental stewards and more.
