Maple Syrup Day

Location: W.K. Kellogg Experimental Forest
Take the day to enjoy the forest’s transition to spring and explore the art of maple syrup production during Maple Syrup Day at MSU’s W.K. Kellogg Experimental Forest on Saturday, March 17, 2012.
Kellogg Forest and Kellogg Biological Station (KBS) volunteers will host special activities from noon until 5 p.m. Visitors can enjoy a wagon ride to the sugar bush, view a tapping demonstration, visit Maple Manor and taste a fresh syrup sample. Children’s activities include face painting, creating tree cookie medallions and playing a traditional game.
Syrup will be on sale in pint ($10) and quart ($15) containers.

About the speaker:
Jonathan Fink has been Vice President for Research and Strategic Partnerships at Portland State University (PSU) since September 2010. In this role he oversees administration of PSU’s grants and contracts, strategic planning for the university’s research agenda, and the strengthening of ties with private sector, government, non-profit, and academic partners. He also is actively engaged in research and policy on ways for cities to become more sustainable. Before coming to PSU, Dr. Fink was a long-time administrator and geology professor at Arizona State University, where he conducted research on volcanic eruptions on earth and other planets. During ten years as VP for Research, Fink oversaw the near tripling of ASU’s research funding, largely through the promotion and supervision of interdisciplinary centers and institutes dealing with biodesign, sustainability, religion and conflict, flexible displays, and technology-mediated decision support. Dr. Fink also served as Director of ASU’s Global Institute of Sustainability and as University Sustainability Officer. He is a member of Advisory Boards of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History, KB Homes, and the Arizona Chapter of The Nature Conservancy, as well as the U.S. National Committee for Geosciences. He is a fellow of the Geological Society of America and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
National Book Award Winner Edmund Morris

"I am Sorry the Trees Have been Cut Down, Theodore Roosevelt the Conservationist," presented by Edmund Morris at 3 p.m., Monday, March 26 in the Big Ten Room C at the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center.
A National Book Award winner and Pulitzer Prize recipient, Morris will offer reflections on the development of Roosevelt’s conservation vision: the first glimmers of sustainability as a goal of natural resources management.Morris has penned a three volume chronicle of the life of Roosevelt and spent 14 years as Ronald Reagan’s authorized biographer, ultimately publishing the national bestseller: "Dutch: A Memoir of Ronald Reagan."
Morris’ talk is sponsored by the Boone and Crockett Club, the MSU Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability, and the MSU James Madison College.
This lecture is free and open to the public and is followed by a reception.
Field Ornithology Course

The fifth annual Field Ornithology Course will be held this spring at the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary. The Tuesday evening lectures and Saturday morning field trips will allow you to learn alongside other interested adults. Tuesday lectures are from 6:30-8:30 p.m., and Saturday field trips are from 8-11 a.m. Participants can choose to participate in both lectures and field trips (recommended) or just lectures or field trips. Registration is required.

Elegance and Etiquette at Manners at the Manor
