Opportunities for green thumbs abound at MSU ANR Week

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Are you interested in learning more
about gardening? This year’s Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR) Week
features several horticulture-related workshops.
ANR Week, an annual event that
hosts a wide variety of meetings, workshops and conferences in areas such as
agriculture, horticulture and natural resources on the Michigan State
University (MSU) campus, takes place March 3 to 10.
The following is a list of horticulture-related workshops:
Michigan Herb Associates (MHA) 25th Annual Conference will take place March 7 and 8 at the Eppley and Kellogg
centers. This year’s theme, “Everything’s Coming up Roses,” will focus on lectures
and demonstrations that will include sessions on the study of herbs and plants;
better living through botanic chemistry; biodiversity; cooking demonstrations; garden
art; rose, the 2012 Herb of the Year; and a celebration of the MHA’s 25 years of
promoting and supporting herbal education. For MHA members, advance registration
is $45 for one day or $75 for both. For nonmembers, advance registration is $70

Horticultural Therapy: Connecting People and Plants will take place March 9, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in
the Plant and Soil Sciences building. Michigan Horticultural Therapy
Association’s (MHTA) annual conference is an opportunity for those interested
in learning about horticulture as therapy to gain understanding and skills. Early-bird
registration (postmarked by Feb. 27) is $55 for MHTA members and $75 for
nonmembers. After Feb. 27, registration is $65 for members and $85 for

Seasons of Change: Using Horticulture Therapy Year Round is another MHTA-hosted workshop. It will inspire participants
to enrich the lives of others by utilizing horticulture as therapy in practical
ways. Registration is $40, and the program runs from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.,
March 10, in the Plant and Soil Sciences building.
The Michigan Gladiolus Conference will take place March 15 and 16 at the Holiday Inn in Kalamazoo. The conference will cover a glad floral design class, new introductions and upcoming seedlings, and it will feature guest speakers. Registration costs $20. ANR Week, formerly Farmers’ Week, is in its 97th year.
