Construction Management Program Funding Priorities
Various departments in the College of Agriculture and Natural have been home to the building construction program since it was established in 1948, most recently the Agricultural Engineering Department. The Building Construction Management program at Michigan State University has been given the opportunity to develop into a proposed School of Construction Management. The Program has nearly 3000 graduates serving the construction industry in Michigan, across the country and internationally. The program is accredited by the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE) and nationally recognized for its high quality graduates and faculty.
School of Construction Management (Naming Opportunity) The Building Construction Management program offers a strong undergraduate programs that is accredited by the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE) and nationally recognized for its high quality graduates and faculty. The program has nearly 3000 graduates serving the construction industry in Michigan, across the country and internationally. The program had the potential to develop into one of the top schools of construction management in the country. Substantial resources are necessary to complete the transition to the School of Construction Management that began in 2000. Additional faculty and a new building equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories and classrooms are necessary to complete the transition.
Endowed Professorship in Residential Construction An endowed residential chair could bring the Construction Management Program new and expanded expertise that would significantly enhance our teaching and research programs in support of the residential segment of the industry. This individual could mentor younger faculty, and lead development of the programs that support the needs of the industry. This individual would help Michigan State University to respond more effectively to some of the critical housing issues facing the state and the nation.
Endowed Professorship in Commercial Construction An endowed commercial construction chair could bring the Construction Management Program new and expanded expertise that would significantly enhance our teaching and research programs in support of the commercial/industrial segment of the construction industry. This individual could mentor younger faculty, and lead development of the programs that support the needs of this segment of the industry.
Endowed Professorship in Energy Efficient Construction Energy efficiency in the built environment is an increasingly important field of study that is becoming significantly important to the lives of Americans. Energy touches the lives of every American and translates directly to dollars. The social, economic and environmental implications of energy efficiency in the built environment will continue to grow as an important national priority. An Endowed Chair in Energy Efficient Construction would bring a level of scholarship and recognition to MSU seen only in a few select institutions across the country. An endowed chair could lead the department in addressing the critical issues and challenges that face the nation relative to energy consumption in the built environment. A leading faculty member in this position could recruit outstanding graduate students to the program.
Endowed Professorship in Land Use Planning The Construction Management Program has faculty representing a variety of disciplines in construction science and engineering, however, none of our faculty have expertise in the application of socio-economic and philosophical disciplines to the issues facing society relative to land use for the built environment. The Construction Management Program desires to establish an endowed professorship that will foster dialogue and scholarship on the role of land use and reuse relative to the built environment. We would seek to make this position a joint appointment between the Construction Management Program and the Department of Political Science, Resource Development, Urban Affairs or a similar unit within the University.
Endowed visiting professorships A Visiting Professorship Program is needed to assure that the Construction Management Program keeps students, faculty, and professional staff current on the issues facing the construction industry. Distinguished faculty filling this position on a short-term basis would bring innovative research and teaching techniques, different philosophical perspectives and a more global view of the construction industry to the program. This will enable faculty and students to interact and collaborate with faculty beyond MSU and provide the vision necessary to assure the program continues to meet the needs of the industry.
Visiting lecturers endowment These positions provide expenses and fees for a visiting lecturer, prominent scholar or experienced practitioner, whose visit might range from one day to two weeks. This could be expanded into a Construction Management Lecture Series serving students and industry professionals alike.
