Kellogg Biological Station Funding Priorities
The Kellogg Biological Station originated through the deeding of the former private estate of W.K. Kellogg to Michigan State College. Today it is a major public resource composed of the original estate, Kellogg Farm, Kellogg Bird Sanctuary and Kellogg Biological Laboratories.
Endowed rooms within the Kellogg Manor House and associated grounds To preserve the historic nature of the Kellogg Manor House and associated grounds, we seek to endow rooms within the house and various features of the estate grounds. This will provide the continuous preservation and heritage of the original estate. Site restoration will include gardens, fountains and vegetation along the shoreline of Gull Lake. Reintroduction of native plants and trees will compliment the restoration project.
Endowed displays and demonstration sites at the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary The Kellogg Bird Sanctuary stands as a valuable education and research facility, promoting habitat and wildlife conservation to school groups, government agencies, researchers, college students and residents of southwest Michigan. Visitors receive a unifying message concerning the importance of biological diversity, and preserving and restoring habitats that allow the survival of key species. The Sanctuary instills this message through programming around key species, and fulfilling the innate desire of humans to watch and nurture wildlife.
Endowed internships and interpretive displays at the Kellogg Farm The Kellogg Farm includes a dairy center, farming systems center and living field laboratory used to investigate production strategies that are resource conserving, environmentally responsible and socially acceptable. It offers a unique experiential laboratory for farmers, veterinarians, students and those involved in agribusiness industry to learn about advances in animal health and nutrition, whole herd management, crop management via site-specific technology, and the integration of animal and crop management strategies. We desire to increase our opportunities to better interpret and demonstrate agricultural production strategies that are environmentally responsible and socially acceptable. We seek to build on these programs through endowments that support future programs and training internships.
Endowed undergraduate and graduate fellowships at the Kellogg Biological Laboratories A long-standing leader in ecology and evolutionary biology research and teaching, Kellogg Biological Laboratories span the buildings and landscapes of KBS. The Laboratories are home to an interdisciplinary resident faculty that conducts studies, advises graduate students and teaches classes across the varied natural and managed habitats at KBS. We seek to build on these programs through endowed undergraduate and graduate fellowships and research awards to ensure a continuous pool of top-quality talent for the future.
