Responsibility

Dr. Hawkins is a leading authority on beef cattle management. He served as the faculty coordinator of the MSU Beef Cattle Teaching Center from 1973 to 2007. This herd is regarded as a global reservoir of superior Angus and Polled Hereford genetics and has exported cattle, semen and embryos to countries around the world. Dr. Hawkins has judged most of the major beef cattle shows in the U.S. as well as national shows in Australia, Canada and Denmark. Since 1988, he has served as the co-chairman of the Michigan Cattlemen's Association Bull Performance Testing Program. Dr. Hawkins served as the faculty coordinator for the MSU Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education, which is a regional center for animal education and exhibition events. He served as the MSU Animal Science undergraduate coordinator for 21 years and as superintendent of the National Collegiate Livestock Judging Contest for 10 years.

He is the recipient of three prestigious awards from the American Society of Animal Science (ASAS). In 1999, he received the Distinguished Teacher Award and in 2006 he received both the Animal Industry Service Award and the Fellow Award for Teaching from the ASAS. He has been awarded the Distinguished Teacher, Distinguished Faculty, Distinguished Service, and Camden Endowed Teacher/Scholar Awards by MSU's College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. In 2007, he received the Chevalier Award from the Australian Angus Society. In addition to ASAS, he holds memberships in ARPAS, Gamma Sigma Delta and Sigma Xi.
