Dr. Siegford coordinates, develops and teaches online and face-to-face courses in animal welfare and behavior. She currently teaches an undergraduate face-to-face course on Applied Animal Behavior (ANS 305) and a graduate online course on Animal Welfare Assessment (ANS 805). She is currently developing an online undergraduate course in animal welfare.
Dr. Siegford’s research examines the impacts of management practices on the growth and development of young animals in production. Currently she is studying the effects of non-abrupt weaning strategies on the behavior and performance of beef cattle. Dr. Siegford also works to develop non-invasive, automated methods for collecting behavior and welfare data from animals in their home environments. In addition to her work on production species, Dr. Siegford also performs research on the behavior and welfare of companion animals, including use of temperament tests in shelters for both dogs and cats.
Dr. Siegford is a Certified Associate Applied Animal Behaviorist through the Animal Behavior Society and provides consultation for veterinarians faced with companion animal behavior problems.
