Michigan State University Animal Behavior and Welfare Group (MSU-ABWG) is the recipient of the Higher Education Challenge Grant (USDA). The MSU team, Adroaldo J. Zanella, Camie Heleski & Kirsty Laughlin (MSU-ABWG) and Richard Snider (Department of Zoology), proposed to develop an "Interactive Animal Welfare Assessment Course". Hillary Noyes (MSU-ABWG) played an important role in the development of the proposal. More than 20 research groups will be working with the MSU- ABWG to run the interactive course. The College of Veterinary Medicine, Information Technology Group will assist the MSU-ABWG. The methodology to develop the successful proposal evolved from the Animal Welfare Judging/Assessment Concept, which was initially funded by the Animal Industry Coalition, Agriculture and Natural Resources Week and Humane Society of the United States. The USDA Higher Education Program will give $100,000 to the MSU-ABWG and the team raised additional $100,000 of matching funds (3/4 competitive intramural & extramural funds and 1/4 from the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and College of Natural Science) to carry out the project.
Nathalie Trottier and collaborators Brian Kerr at ARS-USDA Center, Ames and JT Yen at ARS-USDA Center, Nebraska, have received a National Pork Board grant to examine the effect of dietary amino acid source, i.e., protein-bound or synthetic, on the portal amino acid appearance profile and hepatic amino acid uptake in growing pigs. Dr. Trottier is the principal investigator.
