Livestock Judging TeamLivestock Judging Team Sept. 2009
Sept. 19, 2009

The Livestock Judging Team competed in the Eastern National Intercollegiate Judging Contest on Saturday, September 19 in Timonium, MD. The team finished 2nd overall, winning the oral reasons division and placing 3rd in beef, sheep, and swine. Cally Hass was high individual in Beef and 2nd overall, while Bailey Albright was high individual in oral reasons. Anjuli Doyle finished 4th in Sheep, while Rebecca Brown and Kelli Rau finished 9th and 10th in Swine, respectively.

Team members include, Bailey Albright, Coldwater, MI; Rebecca Brown, Pittsburgh, PA; Anjuli Doyle, Big Rapids, MI; Cally Hass, Cassopolis, MI; and Kelli Rau, West Branch, MI. The team is coached by Ms. Ashley Bushman.

MSU Equestrian Team National Honors
April 23-26, 2009

The MSU Equestrian Team had an amazing run at the IHSA National Horse Show in Murfreesboro, TN on April 23 - 26, 2009, bringing home 1 National Championship, 1 Reserve National Championship, 2 Top Ten finishers, and 6th Place Overall Team. Shelby Piechorowski, sophomore Animal Science and Agribusiness major, brought home the National Championship in Individual Intermediate Equitation on the Flat, beating out a field of 18 of the top riders in the nation. In other individual news, Ashley Jabrocki, sophomore Animal Science major, earned 8th place in Individual Open Horsemanship against 12 of the top riders. Both students worked extremely hard to earn both individual berths at Nationals, and I am very proud of their accomplishments!

As for the team competition, MSU earned a 6th place finish against the top 9 teams in the country. The team was led by Molly White, sophomore Animal Science major, as she won Reserve National Champion in Team Novice Horsemanship. Charlene Kolodziej, junior Economics major, also placed 6th in Team Advanced Horsemanship. Other team members who competed in the Team classes at Nationals included Stephanie Murray, senior Criminal Justice major (Open Horsemanship, Open Reining), Samantha Vitous, sophomore Chemical Engineering major (Intermediate Horsemanship), and Rambalina Williams, freshman Premedical major (Beginner Horsemanship). All team members worked extremely hard to insure Michigan State University was well represented, and it earned them a 6th place finish overall, quite a feat for any team!

MidWest Regional Academic Quadrathlon
March 23, 2009

Fourteen teams competed in the MidWest Regional Academic Quadrathlon last week in Des Moines, Iowa. The contest was held in conjunction with the ASAS/ADSA Midwest Professional meetings. Teams from across the Midwest compete in oral presentations, laboratory practical, quiz bowl, and written exams. The MSU Team consisted of Paul Ayers, Jessica Hiemstra, Katelyn Thompson, and Elin Westover. The team from MSU received First Place Honors in the laboratory practical against some of the top schools in the Midwest. The MSU team also captured 5th place in Oral Presentation and finished 6th overall. Please congratulate the team on their great performance.

MSU Equestrian Team Takes Top Honors
March 2, 2009

The MSU Equestrian Team ended its regular show season on Sunday, February 22 by taking home Zone 6 Region 4 High Point Team honors in both the Hunt Seat and the Stock Seat disciplines. First, Hunt Seat riders narrowly beat the University of Michigan on February 14 to end up as the High Point Hunt Seat Team. Then, on February 22, the Stock Seat riders completed the sweep by defeating Western Michigan University to win the High Point Stock Seat Team two years in a row. This is the first year since 1992 that the Hunt Seat discipline has captured top honors, and the first year in team history that the Hunt Seat and Stock Seat disciplines were named High Point Team in the same year. The wins allow the Equestrian Team to compete at the National Western Semi-Finals (Stock Seat discipline) at West Texas A&M University on March 20 through 22 and the Zone 6 Championships (Hunt Seat discipline) at the Detroit Equestrian Club on March 28 .

Furthermore, the team qualified 22 people to compete individually at the Zone 6 Region 4 Regional Championships to be held March 8 (Stock) and March 15 (Hunt) at WMU and UM, respectively. Midwest Dairy Challenge
January 29-31, 2009

Four MSU animal science students represented the university at the 5th annual Midwest Dairy Challenge in Rochester, Minnesota on January 29-31, 2009. The event increases students' knowledge and comprehension of dairy business management and prepares them for future careers in the dairy industry.

MSU Equestrian Team Results
December 1, 2008

The Michigan State University Equestrian Team ended their Fall Semester show season leading Intercollegiate Horse Show Association

(IHSA) Zone 6 Region 4 in both the Stock Seat and the Hunt Seat divisions. The team accumulated 2 High Point Team Championships (1 Stock, 1 Hunt) and 6 Reserve High Point Team Championships (3 Stock, 3 Hunt) throughout the semester, and they also qualified 10 riders for the IHSA Zone 6 Region 4 Regional Championships to be held in March. Qualified riders include:

2008 Livestock Judging Team Results
November 17, 2008

The 2008 Livestock Judging Team completed their season at the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, KY on Monday, November 17. With 27 teams participating, the team finished 17th overall. Team members included Ben Barkow (Conklin, MI), Ryan Peterson (Niles, MI), Julie Thelen (Saline, MI), Katelyn Thompson (Charlotte, MI), and Elin Westover (Traverse City, MI). The team also competed in several other contests throughout the fall including the National Barrow Show in Austin, MN, the Keystone International in Harrisburg, PA, the Stockman in Frankfort, IN, and the American Royal in Kansas City, MO.

Animal Welfare Judging Competition Results
November 1-2, 2008

The 8th annual Animal Welfare Judging & Assessment Competition and Educational Seminar was held at Michigan State University on November, 1-2, 2008. Katelynn Lebbins from team MSU placed first in the undergraduate division. Teammate Emelie Evenson finished third and Matt Hasenjager placed fifth. Evenson also won the individual questions category in the undergraduate division. The undergraduate team from MSU placed second overall; Purdue won the division. The team from the University of Guelph won the veterinary college division. Jennafer Glaesemann, Iowa State University, was high individual in the veterinary division; second through fourth place was won by members of the Guelph team.

The MSU undergraduate team was represented by Lebbins, Evenson, Hasenjager, Kevin Dacres and Kate Mills. The veterinary division team members were Ann Crum, Liz Saletta and Chelsey Shivley. The MSU undergraduate team was coached by Camie Heleski, who also helped coach the CVM team. Dalen Agnew was the primary coach for the CVM team. Camie organized the contest here at MSU with the assistance of a dedicated team of volunteers.

Horse Judging Team Results
October 24, 2008

The MSU Horse Judging Team competed at the Arabian Nationals Horse Judging Contest in Tulsa, OK on Friday, October, 24th. There were 22 collegiate teams competing in the contest. MSU finished 4th in Reasons, 3rd in Halter/Conformation judging, 3rd in Performance judging, and 3rd Overall in the contest. Individual MSU student awards were as follows Kim Krawczak, 7th Halter, 7th Performance, 5th Overall; Samantha Kline, 10th in Halter; Alexis Levitt, 10th Performance, 6th Reasons; other members of the team were Lynn DeYoung, Mackenzie Kastl, Nicole Luyk, and Rachel Yeo.

Equestrian Team Results
October 18-19, 2008

he MSU Equestrian Team competed in their first two Hunt Seat Shows of the season at Western Michigan University on October 18 and 19, taking home Reserve High Point Team honors at both the Saturday and Sunday competition. The team currently leads Zone 6, Region 4 in cumulative team points, a feat which allowed them to be invited to the Holiday Tournament of Champions Hunt Seat Competition at Lake Erie College in December. The Tournament of Champions is an invitation only competition, with only 24 teams across the Nation receiving a bid to compete.

Other highlights from the WMU competition include: At Saturday's competition, all 6 riders competing in Equitation Over Fences classes placed in the top 4 in their respective classes, and 12 of the 16 riders competing in Equitation on the Flat classes placed in the top 3. At Sunday's competition, Alycia Kowalski, a junior Zoology major, received High Point Rider honors by winning both her Intermediate Equitation Over Fences and Intermediate Equitation on the Flat classes.

The Equestrian Team has worked hard to represent MSU at these shows and continue to work as they compete at Grand Valley State University on October 26. Please congratulate any students who are a part of the Team and their success.

Livestock Judging Team Results
April 13, 2008

Students from Michigan State University (MSU) took 5th place in the All East Intercollegiate Livestock Judging Contest held April 10-13 at the University of Kentucky. Eleven teams and 74 individuals competed in the three-day event. The team consisted of: Matt Asmus, Vandalia; Ben Barkow, Conklin; Ryan Peterson, Niles; Julie Thelen, Saline; Katelyn Thompson, Charlotte; Monica Vanklompenberg, Zeeland; and Elin Westover, Traverse City.

2008 livestock judging teamThe All East is an intense three-day competition for Intercollegiate Livestock Judging Teams. Students are required to not only judge classes of livestock and present oral reasons, but also to participate in meat animal evaluation and breeding animal selection.

Day One of the All East is the Meat Animal Evaluation Contest. Students evaluate 8 animals of each species (beef cattle, swine, and sheep) for backfat, expected lean cut yield, live market value, and an economic performance ranking. All animals are harvested in order to obtain actual carcass data.

Day Two is the Selection Contest. Three breeding animal keep/cull classes of each species are provided, requiring students to denote which 4 animals to keep and which 4 to cull based on each animal’s phenotype, performance data, and adaptability to the specific scenario given. Six breeding animal ranking classes, with performance data and environmental scenarios included, are a portion of the Selection Contest as well. In addition, students must answer 10 questions for each keep/cull and ranking class.

Day Three, the final day, features a standard Livestock Judging Contest. Each participant judges 12 classes of livestock, both breeding and market animals, and gives 8 sets of oral reasons.

An awards breakfast was held on the morning of April 13, 2008. The team finished 4th overall in the Meat Animal Evaluation Contest. Ryan Peterson, Ben Barkow, and Katelyn Thompson earned top ten honors in Beef Cattle Evaluation with 3rd, 7th, and 9th place, respectively. The team was 2nd in Beef Cattle Evaluation and 4th in Swine Evaluation. In the Livestock Judging Contest, MSU took 5th place overall. Barkow was 4th high individual in Beef Judging. The team was 3rd in Beef Judging. Matt Asmus and Elin Westover finished in the top ten of sheep judging taking 3rd and 9th place, respectively. MSU finished 5th in the oral reasons category.

MSU Equestrian Team Qualifies for National Show
April 7, 2008

The MSU Equestrian Team competed in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association National Western Semi Final Show last weekend in Laurinburg, NC, taking home 3rd place honors and qualifying as one of only 9 teams to move on to the IHSA National Championship Show to be held in Burbank, CA on May 8 through 11, 2008. This is the first time the a whole team has qualified for competition since the 1990's and tops off a season in which the team placed no lower than 2nd at any of the 9 regular season shows. Competing for the Spartans and their individual placings were:

  • Stephanie Murray, 3rd Place Team Open Horsemanship
  • Jamie Kalleward, 4th Place Team Advanced Horsemanship

  • Aleta Daniels, 8th Place Team Beginner Horsemanship.

Please congratulate any of these students, as well as any other members of the Equestrian Team, that you may have in class. All 40 members of the MSU Equestrian Team worked hard all year to qualify the team for Nationals, and we hope to make a strong showing in Burbank. GO STATE!

MSU Team Takes First Place at Dairy Challenge
April 5, 2008

Students from MSU won a 1st place Platinum placing in the Seventh Annual North American Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge (NAIDC) held April 4-5, 2008 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, with 31 teams from the United States and one team from Canada competing.

The team from MSU consisted of: Christine Hadley, Niles; Ashley Messing, Bad Axe; Andrew Reinker, Horton; and Laura Zeldenrust, Fremont. Herb Bucholtz, Marcus Hollman, and Miriam Weber Nielsen coached the team.

NAIDC is an innovative two-day competition for students representing dairy science programs at North American universities. It enables students to apply theory and learning to a real-world dairy, while working as part of a four-person team.

MSU Equestrian Team Season Highlights
March 2008

The MSU Equestrian Team ended the regular season of shows by competing both at home and on the road in the Spring Semester. The Stock Seat team finished with a strong showing of Reserve High Point Team in the last three shows, placing them at the top of Zone 6 Region 4. Because the team finished in First Place in their region, the Stock Seat team has earned the honor of representing Z6R4 at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association National Semi Final Championships to be held March 29. Seven team members will travel to North Carolina to represent Michigan State University, and they will ride for the chance to take their team to the IHSA National Championships to be held in Burbank, CA in May.

The hunt seat team also ended their final show with a Reserve High Point Team award, and finished 5th overall in a field of 13 schools across the state of Michigan.

Individually, the MSU Equestrian Team will be sending 12 students on to Regional competitions over the next two weeks. Students who place in the top two at Regional competition earn a shot at competing in Semi Final or Zone Championships. The MSU Hunt Seat Regional Qualifiers will be competing this Saturday, March 15, at the University of Findlay, while the Stock Seat Regional Qualifiers will compete Saturday, March 22 at Western Michigan University. 2008 ASAS ADSA Midwest meeting
March 17-19, 2008

2008 academic quadrathlon teamMichigan State Animal Science accomplishments from undergraduates include the Academic Quadrathlon Team at the ASAS Midwest meetings in Des Moines, Iowa. Team members included: Gail Carpenter, ANS Junior from Dansville; Bobby Laux, ANS Sophomore from Petersburg; Erica Wines, ANS Senior from Richland; and Jason Scramlin, ANS Junior form Holly. After capturing first place among 8 teams at the Block and Bridle/MSU local competition, this team represented MSU very well at the Midwest completion. The MSU team placed first in both the Sheep lab and General Lab of the lab practical. They also competed in a written exam, a quiz bowl and an oral presentation. Well done guys!

Animal Welfare Judging Competition Results
March 21-22, 2008

The competition was hosted this past weekend by Michigan State University. MSU students had a strong showing & won the overall undergraduate division. Team members were Clarissa Allen, Jordan Ball & Chelsey Shivley. They were coached by Camie Heleski. The team from University of Guelph placed 2nd in the undergraduate division. Atlantic Veterinary College, Prince Edward Island, Canada was the winning team for the veterinary division. And 2nd place in the veterinary division went to Western College of Veterinary Medicine of Saskatoon, Canada. Individually, the MSU students brought home 3 of the top 5 awards - Clarissa was 2nd place individual high point; Chelsey was 3rd individual high point & Jordan was 4th individual high point. Midwest Regional Dairy Challenge Results
January 31 - February 2, 2008

Students from 2-year and 4-year dairy programs at MSU competed in the Fourth Annual Midwest Dairy Challenge on Jan. 31-Feb. 2, 2008 in Merrillville, Indiana. The event, hosted by Purdue University, attracted 102 students from 13 universities and colleges. Students representing MSU included Nicole Beeching, Andre Bruinsma, Brad Curtis, Johan deGroot, Lindsey First, Christine Hadley, Rebecca Hale, Mike Hattis, Kayla Kreh, Joe Pasch, Kayla StomackKatelyn Thompson, Greg Thon, Kingsley, and Laura Zeldenrust.

Dairy Challenge is an innovative competition developed by industry and university professionals for students in dairy-related programs at North American universities and schools. Working in four- or five-person teams composed of students from different institutions, students assessed a working dairy farm and presented recommendations for improvement to a panel of judges and the farm owners.

MSU Equestrian Team Ends Year with Pair of Wins
October - December 2007

The MSU Equestrian Team finished their Fall show semester with a pair of wins, courtesy of the Stock Seat Team. First, the Hunt Seat Team travelled to Grand Valley State University October 28, collecting 4th place honors in a field of 12 colleges and universities from across the state. Among the highlights, Bonnie Willyard, East Asian Languages and Culture Sophomore, won her class and earned enough points to qualify for the Zone 6 Region 4 Championships in Advanced Walk/Trot/Canter Equitation. On November 3 and 4, the Hunt Seat Team travelled to the University of Michigan, where they earned 5th and 4th place honors, respectively. Laura DeBruin, Animal Science Sophomore, obtained enough points over the weekend to qualify her for Regional competition in Novice Equitation on the Flat, and Jenna McGrath, Urban and Regional Planning Senior, qualified for Regional competition in Advanced Walk/Trot/Canter Equitation.

The Stock Seat Team travelled to Western Michigan University on December 1 for a pair of shows, taking top honors at both. Helping with the wins was Chelsey Shivley, Animal Science/Pre-Veterinary Medicine Senior, who shared High Point Rider honors in the morning show. These wins mark the 3rd and 4th for the Stock Seat team, leaving them undefeated for the Fall semester. Please congratulate any and all members of the Team. Each student is displaying a great amount dedication and work ethic as they strive to qualify for the IHSA National Championships in Burbank, California in May.

MSU Block & Bridle Wins Awards at National Convention
October 18-21, 2007

The MSU Chapter of Block & Bridle was awarded 1st place at the organization's national convention in Kansas City for the club's Web site and also won first place in the Scrap Book contest. Club members enjoyed the opportunity to tour many different sites representing Kansas agriculture and benefited from an outstanding set of speakers from many different areas of Agriculture. The American Royal livestock show was also happening in KC - offering members the opportunity to see livestock events and the PBR Bull Riding event!

MSU Equestrian Team Results
October 13-20, 2007

The MSU Equestrian Team began their show season this month, travelling to four shows hosted by Western Michigan University. On October 13 and 14, the team travelled to Galesburg to compete in a Hunt Seat Equitation show, bringing home a 5th place finish on Saturday and a 3rd place finish on Sunday. Nicole Sienkiewicz, junior Education major and Hunt Seat Team Captain, tied for Reserve High Point Rider on Sunday. Also, Carrie Jacobs, senior Animal Science major, qualified for Regional competition in Novice Hunt Seat Equitation on the Flat. The Team travelled again this past weekend, this time taking the Stock Seat riders to Augusta to compete in a double-header on Saturday, October 20. The Stock Seat Team brought home top honors at both shows, being named High Point Team in both the morning and afternoon competitions, beating out a field of 7 other schools from around Michigan. Chelsey Shivley, senior Animal Science major and Stock Seat Team Captain, shared High Point Rider honors in the morning show, and Stephanie Murray, senior Pre-Law major, tied for Reserve High Point Rider in the afternoon.

Furthermore, Jamie Kalleward, junior Animal Science major, and Ashley VandeBroek, sophomore Animal Science major, qualified for Regional competition in Novice Horsemanship and Advanced Horsemanship, respectively. Please congratulate these students on their hard work if you see them around campus!

The team will be competing October 28 (Hunt Seat show hosted by Grand Valley State University), November 3 and 4 (Double-header Hunt Seat show hosted by University of Michigan), November 17 (Double-header Stock Seat show hosted by Grand Valley State University), and December 1 (Double-header Stock Seat show hosted by Western Michigan University). To catch them team in action closer to home, the Horsemen's Association is sponsoring a weekend of horse competitions on January 12 and 13, 2008, at the MSU Pavilion.

Arabian Sport Horse National Results
September 26-30, 2007

Paula Hitzler manager of the Horse Teaching and Research Center took two undergraduate students and 3 horses to the Arabian Sport Horse National the last weekend in September. All horses shown at this event must qualify in there respective divisions before they are allowed to enter. The students showed the three geldings in a variety of classes and were extremely successful. They brought home 9 National Top Ten awards and one National Championship.

  • MSU Counterfeit was unanimous National Champion Junior Sport Horse Under Saddle. He was shown by Brooke Fuchs a 2nd year Ag Tech student. There were 58 entries in this class.
  • The Reserve Champion in this division was MSU Autocracy a gelding bred by MSU he was also unanimous Reserve National Champion.
  • Jennifer Berg an Animal Science Senior showed MSU Shaikh It Up to 3 Top Tens.

All three geldings were Top Ten Sport Horses in Hand and there were 90 entries in this class. If you see Paula, Brooke or Jennifer please congratulate them as they really did a great job representing the University and the Department.

Animal Welfare Judging/Assessment Competition

The 6th Annual Animal Welfare Judging/Assessment Competition was hosted by MSU. Students attended seminars on Saturday morning conducted by our judges, Dr. Ted Friend (Texas A&M), Dr. Anna Johnson (Iowa State) & Dr. Tina Widowski (University of Guelph). Students then proceeded to compete in a team assessment of a live scenario conducted at the MSU Horse Farm, then evaluated & gave reasons on 3 computerized scenarios. Team results: 1st place - Univ of Guelph, C; 2nd place - MSU; 3rd place - Univ of Guelph, A; 4th place - Univ of Wisconsin-Madison; High point team assessment: Univ of Guelph, C; Individual results: 1st - Nicole McDowell, MSU; 2nd - Jason Russell, U of Wisconsin-Madison; 3rd - Annie Klahn, U of Wisconsin-Madison; Hi point on questions-Jason Russell, U of Wisconsin-Madison. The following students were part of the MSU team: Stephanie Honer, Nicole McDowell, Angela Pechota, and Kolina Riley. They were coached by Camie Heleski and Beth Ventura. A hearty thank you to all who helped to make the contest a success!

North American Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge
March 30-31, 2007

2007 Dairy Challenge TeamThe 6th annual North American Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge was hosted on March 30-31 in Sioux Falls, SD by Iowa State University and South Dakota State University. The event attracted 29 4-person teams from the United States and Canada, challenging them to put their textbook and practical knowledge to the ultimate test ­ analyzing dairies. The format started with a walk-through at the dairies, followed by the opportunity to ask questions of the owners and analyze farm-specific data. Student teams used this information to develop management recommendations, and then presented their management recommendations to a panel of five dairy industry judges. Supported financially through generous donations by industry and coordinated by a volunteer board of directors, the first NAIDC was held at Michigan State University in April 2002.

Michigan State's team earned "Gold" ranking, placing behind Iowa State University and Cornell University in their farm division. The students representing MSU were Joann Greenfield--Animal Science, Annapolis, MD; Elizabeth Douglass Marvel--Animal Science, Fowler; Jenny Nurenberg--Animal Science, Pewamo; and Matthew Oesch--Agribusiness Management, Alto. Coaches were Miriam Weber Nielsen and Herb Bucholtz. Congratulations to our team on their excellent performance!

2007 Academic Quadrathlon

The Academic Quadrathlon team went to Des Moines, IA to complete. The team consisted of Matt Sneller, Erica Lindstrom, Stephanie Silm and Monica VanKlompenberg. They placed 6th overall out of 15 teams. The team tied for 2nd in Written Exams and they were 5th in Oral Presentations. They placed 9th in Quiz Bowl and 10th in Lab Practicals.

Livestock Judging Team Results
Nov. 13, 2006

The MSU Collegiate Dairy Judging team was the high team overall at the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, KY this past weekend. Team members include Matt Sneller, a senior in Animal Science, Mary TenBrink and Baylee Drown, juniors in Animal Science, and Jessica Geurink, a junior in Agribusiness Management. The team placed 2nd in oral reasons, 1st in Holsteins and Jerseys, 3rd in Guernseys and 4th in Brown Swiss. Individually, Baylee was 3rd in Ayrshires. Mary was 1st in Guernseys, 5th in Brown Swiss, and 7th overall. Jessica was 2nd in Jerseys, 8th in Holsteins, and 9th in reasons. Matt was 1st in Jerseys, 3rd in Holsteins, 9th in Guernseys, and 2nd in oral reasons and 2nd overall. This team of placed 1st, 6th and 7th overall in the three national dairy judging competitions held this fall.

The MSU Ag Tech Dairy Judging team was the 5th high team overall at the at the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, KY this past weekend. Team members include Tim Gamble, Ashley Messing, Adam Preston, and Kenda Quist who are all students in the Ag Tech Dairy Management program. The team was 3rd in Guernseys, 4th in Ayrshires, Holsteins and oral reasons, and 5th in Jerseys. Individually, Adam was 7th in Guernseys and Kenda was 10th in Holsteins. Tim was 3rd high individual overall and 3rd in reasons and placed 3rd in Guernseys, 5th in Jerseys, and 6th in Holsteins. This team placed 4th and 5th in the two National dairy judging competitions for junior colleges this fall.

The Michigan 4-H National Dairy Judging Team competed against over 30 state teams at World Dairy Expo in October and was the 3rd high team overall. They were also the high team in oral reasons. Team members included Jessica Fry, a sophomore in Animal Science, Gail Carpenter, a freshman in Animal Science, Billy Shuler, a freshman in the Ag Tech Dairy Program, and Amanda Zwagerman, who is currently attending junior college and will transfer to MSU next fall.

Equestrian Team Results
Oct. 1, 2006

The Michigan State University Equestrian Team competed in their first Stock Seat shows of the year this past October 1 at Grand Valley State University. The team was named High Point Team Sunday afternoon, marking the first High Point win in several years for the Stock Seat team. Stephanie Murray won High Point Rider honors in the first show, while Devon Knipp was named Reserve High Point Rider at the second show. Additionally, Lindsay Weaver collected the final points needed to qualify her for Regional competition in the Spring semester. All team members contributed to the team's success, and we look forward to more exciting news in the future! The next meet will be a Hunt Seat show hosted by Western Michigan University on October 14, 2006.

Livestock Judging Team Results

The Livestock Judging Team represented the Animal Science Department very well this week at the National Barrow Show in Austin, MN finishing 3rd High Team Overall. This contest is an all swine judging event and there were 17 University teams competing this year. Tyler Winegardner from Lima, OH was the 2nd High Individual and Brigitte Grobbel from Richmond, MI was 10th High Individual. Other team members include: Sara Barker, Beth Blauwiekel, Nicole Dingman, Caleb Schaeffer, Mike Sheridan and Ben Vainner.

The Michigan State University Equestrian Team traveled to two meets this past week, finishing up their season and finding out who will compete for MSU at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association National Championships in May. First, twenty members of the team traveled to the University of Findlay to compete in the Zone 6 Region 3 Championships on April 1. Seven individuals competed in the Hunt Seat discipline, while 13 competed in the Stock Seat discipline. To qualify on to compete at the Zone 6 Championships, riders had to place either first or second in their class. Results are as follows:

Those four individuals who qualified for the Zone 6 Championships travelled to Lake Erie College on April 4 and 5 to take place in the final leg to the journey to Nationals. Animal Welfare Judging Competition
March 26-27, 2006

The 5th annual Animal Welfare Judging/Assessment competition was held at the University of Wisconsin - Madison on March 26 and 27. MSU came in 2nd in the Team Assessment Problem and 3rd overall. Melissa Liszewski and Ashley Horton both received individual Top 3 awards. Team members were: Annie Edgecomb, Ashley Horton, Melissa Liszewski, Katie Meyer, and Stephanie Provo. The team was coached by Camie Heleski and assisted by two of last year's team members: Jason Smith and Beth Ventura. The winning team was Purdue and one of the coaches was an MSU Animal Science alumnus, Monica Pittman. Next year's contest will return to MSU.

MSU students WON the Academic Quadrathalon at the Midwest Regional ASAS/ADSA meeting. They were undefeated in the Quiz Bowl in a double elimination tournament, 1st in the Lab Practical, 2nd in the Oral Presentation and 4th in the Written Exam. Leeza Massman was awarded an Honorary Certificate by the Institute of Agricultural Technology.

MSU Equestrian Team Results
Feb. 2006

The Michigan State University Equestrian Team has competed in 18 shows throughout the year, bringing home 13 Reserve High Point Team Championships and 1 High Point Team Championship. The Stock Seat team finished the year as Reserve High Point Team in Zone 6, Region 3, while the Hunt Seat team finished in 3rd place.

Ashley Delzer, a junior human biology major, won the High Point Hunt Seat Rider award for Zone 6, Region 3. With this honor, Ashley will travel to Harrisburg, PA in May to compete in the Cacchione Cup competition at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association National Championships. Furthermore, the MSU Equestrian Team has 20 other riders who have earned enough points to compete at IHSA Regional competition, with the chance to join Ashley in Harrisburg. Qualifying for Regionals are:

MSU Livestock Judging Team Competes in Mississippi

The MSU Livestock Judging Team competed at the Dixie National in Jackson, MS. The Dixie National Collegiate Judging Contest is an all cattle event. The team placed 1st in the Continental division, 3rd in British, 3rd in Reasons, and were the 3rd High Team Overall. Tyler Winegardner of Lima, OH; was the High Individual in Reasons, and 2nd High Individual Overall. Brigitte Grobbel from Richmond, MI was the 4th High Individual Overall. The team will travel to their final contest of the Spring to Houston in March during spring break.

MSU Dairy Judging Team Competes in Texas
Jan. 2006

The 2006 MSU Collegiate Dairy Judging Team traveled to the Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show in Ft. Worth, Texas in January to participate in a dairy judging contest against 15 university teams from across the United States. Team members included Baylee Drown (Cedar Springs), Jessica Geurink (Allendale), Matt Sneller (Sebewaing), and Mary Tenbrink (Coopersville). Assistant dairy judging team coach Beth Munsell traveled with the team. Prior to the contest, the team had the opportunity to visit Lavon Farms, a well known Guernsey and Jersey farm in Plano, Texas.

The MSU team had a very good day, placing 3rd overall in the contest. The top 3 teams in the contest were separated by only 3 points. The team placed 1st in Guernseys, 2nd in Brown Swiss and Holsteins, 6th in Jerseys, and 4th in oral reasons. Individually, Matt Sneller was 7th in Holsteins. Baylee Drown was 6th in Brown Swiss, 7th in Guernseys and 7th overall. Jessica Geurink placed 1st in Brown Swiss and Jerseys, 5th in Guernseys, 2nd in oral reasons, and was 2nd overall in the contest.

Major financial support for the MSU Dairy Judging Program is provided by ABS Global, Michigan Dairy Memorial Foundation, Michigan FFA Alumni Association, Michigan Holstein Association, Michigan Milk Producers Association, Northstar, Inc., and the United Dairy Industry of Michigan. Team members also participate in fund raisers throughout the year, including the Spartan Spectacular Calf Sale held every March. The MSU Dairy Judging Program is coordinated by Dr. Joe Domecq.

National Western Stock Show Livestock Judging
Contest Results, Jan. 2006

The 2006 MSU Livestock Judging Team finished 7th High Team Overall at the National Western Stock Show's Collegiate Livestock Judging Contest last week in Denver, CO. Sara Barker was the 6th High Individual in the contest. There were 24 teams that competed at this event making 120 individual contestants. Sara is a junior from Kendallville, IN majoring in Ag Communications. Other team members include: Beth Blauwiekel, Powamo, MI; Nicole Dingman, Bellevue, MI; Brigitte Grobbel, Richmond, MI; Caleb Schaeffer, Alma, MI; Mike Sheridan, Mason MI; Ben Vainner, Tekonsha, MI; and Tyler Winegardner, Lima, OH. This was the first contest this team has competed in and they compete in two additional contests this Spring, the Dixie National; Jackson, MS and the Houston Livestock Show in Houston, TX.

MSU Block & Bridle Results

Michigan State University's Block and Bridle Club attended the 86th annual Block and Bridle Convention in Columbus, Ohio from October 20 through 23. We are pleased to announce that Megan Townsend, who graduated in May, received the third place award for Outstanding Senior. Also, the club received a third place award for our scrapbook. MSU Equestrian Team Results
Sept. 24 - Oct. 23, 2005

The Michigan State University Equestrian Team has started the year with a bang, bringing home 1 Champion High Point Team Award and 4 Reserve Champion High Point Team Awards in the opening six shows of the season.

First, the MSU Stock Seat Team travelled to Western Michigan University on September 24, bringing home two Reserve Champion High Point Team Awards. Katie Hall tied for Reserve Champion High Point Rider in the morning show, and Erin Kelly and Taylor Tenlen tied each other for Reserve Champion High Point Rider in the afternoon show. Chelsey Shively and Jenny Feldpausch also put in great performances for the team, qualifying to represent MSU at the Regional IHSA Show in the spring.

The MSU Hunt Seat Team has travelled to four shows this year, placing within the top 5 at all four shows. On October 5, the Hunt Seat Team won it's first Reserve Champion High Point Team Award at Grand Valley State University. On October 22, the team won the Champion High Point Team Award at the University of Michigan. On October 23, MSU struck again, winning the Reserve Champion High Point Team award at the University of Michigan. Megan Peters took home High Point Rider honors that day, with Ashley Delzer receiving the Reserve High Point Rider prize. Qualifying to represent MSU at the Regional IHSA Show was Libby Miller and Natasha Smith.

IHSA National Championship Show
May 5-8, 2005

The MSU Equestrian Team sent two members to the IHSA National Championship Show in Sunbury, OH last week.  Laura Warner placed 14th in Novice Equitation Over Fences, and had a wonderful showing in Novice Equitation on the Flat, placing in the top 20.  Ashley Delzer had a 2nd place finish in Open Equitation on the Flat, bringing home the Reserve National Championship in that division!  Both girls worked extremely hard all year to qualify for the event, which brings together the top collegiate riders in the nation to compete for the title of National Champion.

MSU Equestrian Team Results
April 2005

The MSU Equestrian Team just completed another great year, with the Hunt Seat team finishing fourth in the Region and the Stock Seat team finishing third.  Each team travelled to numerous competitions from September to March, with shows being held from Columbus, OH to Kalamazoo, MI. Throughout the year, riders were competing for enough points to qualify for the IHSA Regional Horse Show, which was held April 2 at The University of Findlay.  The top two finishers in each class continued on to compete at the IHSA Zone Horse Show, held on April 17 at the University of Findlay.  Finally, the top two finishers of each class at Zones move on to compete at the IHSA National Championships, which will be held May 5-8, 2005 at Eden Park in Sunbury, OH.

Michigan State University had a great representation at these upper level shows, with five people qualifying for Regionals on the Stock Seat team and four Hunt Seat riders also qualifying.  Results from Regionals were as follows:

North American Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge
April 8-9, 2005

The MSU team of Chris Creguer, Jamie Perry, Bryce Slavik and Joe Tarkowski competed in the 4th Annual North American Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge (NAIDC) held April 8-9 for 27 universities in State College, Pa.  The contest started with a walk-through at 1 of 3 dairy farms, followed by the opportunity to ask questions of the owners and analyze farm-specific data. Student teams used this information to develop management recommendations, and then presented their management recommendations to a panel of five dairy industry judges. Supported financially through generous donations by the dairy industry, the first NAIDC was held for 13 universities at Michigan State University in April 2002.  MSU's team placed in the middle third of the 9 teams in their division. Thanks to Herb Bucholtz, Joe Domecq, Richard Pursley and Ron Erskine for assistance with our team's preparation for the NAIDC.

MSU Team Wins Animal Welfare Competition
April 2, 2005

The 4th animal welfare assessment/judging competition was hosted by Purdue University on April 2nd. The MSU born concept attracted teams from the University of Vermont, University on Wisconsin, Michigan State University and the host institution, Purdue University. The MSU team, coached by Camie Heleski and Rosangela Poletto, was the overall winner of the competition, bringing back the travelling trophy. The 2005 competition had an on-farm welfare assessment exercise, the MSU team ranked second in the on-farm welfare assessment. The team was Liz Saletta, Beth Ventura, Jason Smith and Megan Nickoloff.

Midwest Regional Dairy Challenge
Jan. 27-29, 2005

Picture of the Platinum winers at the Midwest Regional Dairy Challenge Contest.Ten MSU students participated in the inaugural Midwest Regional Dairy Challenge contest on January 27-29 hosted by NE Iowa Community College. Students participated on mixed teams of 4 or 5 students, with 63 total participants from 8 Midwestern schools. Students evaluated herd management at one of two dairy farms in the area on Friday. The next day, teams presented their evaluation and recommendations for improvements to a panel of judges. Three of 13 teams were selected as "Platinum" performers, the contest's highest distinction, including teams with our students Andrew Kobe and Joe Tarkowski.  Other MSU students participating included Brad Curtis, Jessica Hammond, Steve Herr, Aron Jaskolski, Jamie Perry, Bryce Slavik, Molly Yonkman, and Nate Zuiderveen.

National Block & Bridle Convention
Jan. 13-16, 2005

The Block and Bridle Club attended the 85th National Block and Bridle Convention in Denver, Colorado January 13-16.  During the convention members participated in tours, leadership workshops, and attended the National Western Stock Show.  The highlight of the week was our club being recognized during the banquet at the conclusion of the convention.  Emily Hogberg was the runner-up in the Outstanding Junior competition and our Web site received first place honors.  The fifteen members that attended, along with Adviser Dr. Gretchen Hill, had great time!

2004 MSU Livestock Judging Team

The 2004 MSU Livestock Judging Team had a very nice year in competition and represented the Animal Science Department extremely well.  The team members included:  Jeremy Baldwin, Winchester, IN; Katie Cook, Reed City, MI; Jonathan Harfst, Easton, IL; Dan Kiesling, Laingsburg, MI; and Allison Meyer, Greensburg, IN.  The team finished the season as the 10th High Team Overall at the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, KY.  This contest serves as the National Championship Contest for Intercollegiate Livestock Judging Teams.  This year, there were 31 teams from all over the country competing at the NAILE.  Some of the highlights included Katie Cook and Allison Meyer being named to the 2004 All- American Team.  There are 10 students selected each year on the basis of judging success, professional goals, as well as their involvement in university, industry and community activities.  MSU has had four All-Americans since 2000, which was the first year for this program.  The team was also 6th High Overall in Sheep, 8th in Cattle and Katie Cook was the 7th High Individual in Cattle.

In October, the team finished 9th Overall at the American Royal in Kansas City, MO including 2nd High Team in Hogs and 4th High Team in Sheep.  Jeremy Baldwin placed in the Top Ten in Sheep, Cattle, and Reasons, and was the 4th High Individual Overall.  Jonathan Harfst was the High Individual Judging Swine and Allison Meyer was in the Top Ten as well, judging Swine.

The other two contests that MSU competed in this fall were the World Beef Expo in Milwaukee, WI and the National Barrow Show in Austin, MN.  In Milwaukee, MSU was the 4th High Team Overall, placing 3rd in Cattle, 4th in Swine, and 5th in Reasons; and at the National Barrow Show MSU finished 8th Overall. 

MSU Horse Judging Team

Congratulations to MSU's Horse Judging Team! They competed at the Arabian Nationals Intercollegiate Horse Judging Team on Friday, October 15th and won the Overall Team Championship. They were first in Halter, first in Performance and third in Reasons. The following individuals all won Top Ten Individual Awards in one or more categories: Amanda Kutchey (4 - top tens), Courtney Campbell (3 - top tens), Crystal Serra (3 - top tens), Ashley Horton (3 - top tens), Ashley Dupuis (2 - top tens), Jordan Hewitt (1 - top ten), Kate Bailey (1 - top ten); Robin Moore and Karmen Bellhorn were also contributing team members.

The MSU Dairy Judging Teams had an outstanding day at World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin. The 4 year team placed 5th overall out of 26 teams. Emily Sneller was 9th overall and Calby Garrison was 15th overall and 4th in reasons. Jamie Perry and Jolene Griffin are also on the team. The MSU Ag Tech Team won the practical contest and was 7th overall in the traditional judging contest. Team members include Josh Lehman, Carlyle Westendorp, Randy Berens, and Matt Munsell. The Michigan 4-H team placed 2nd overall in the 30 team contest. Three of the 4-H team members are current MSU students. Matt Sneller was high individual overall and high in reasons. Baylee Drown was 6th overall and 9th in reasons. Katie Meyer is also a member of the team. The fourth team member, Alan Gust, will be transferring to MSU next year.
