May 17, 2017 - May 20, 2017
Titled “Power of Partnerships,” the 37th annual conference presented by the Michigan Historic Preservation Network (MHPN), takes place May 17 to 20, 2017 in Emmet County headquartered in Petoskey. While people from across the state will be joining us for the entire conference, there are a number of programming options for those seeking fun things to do at either a low-ticket price or no charge at all!
Two conference highlights are free and open to the public. On Thursday evening from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM, everyone is invited to the Opening Reception, with a cash bar and free snacks, that includes the Vendors’ Showcase, Marketplace, Silent Auction, and Raffle. The Vendors’ Showcase features firms and organizations with the latest preservation products and services.
Also, free, and open to the public is “Tapping the Full Power of Michigan Zoning to Protect Historic Properties.” This session, held Friday, May 19th from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM looks at how zoning codes can, with understanding, be used to protect and enhance historic properties. Among the session speakers are representatives from Michigan Economic Development Corporation, MHPN, Michigan Municipal League, and the Michigan State Historic Preservation Office.
A third event that is free and open to the public is our keynote presentation held from 12:45 PM to 2:00 PM in the Iron Horse Café in the SCRC. Discussing “Partnerships for Preservation” is our keynote speaker, Phil Porter. Mr. Porter is the Director at Mackinac State Historic Parks, where he has been on staff since 1976 and appointed director in 2003.
