“Habitat diversification and management in agro-ecosystems”
Amanda Buchanan, University of Maryland (Matt Grieshop and Zsofia Szendrei)
Amanda Buchanan’s research addresses how sustainable agricultural techniques influence crop-associated plant and arthropod communities. Agricultural crops face a complex seasonal environment of weedy competitors, insect herbivores, and diseases. She is addressing how the presence and diversity of cover crops influence plant productivity, soil quality, and plant-insect interactions in organic cropping systems. She combines ecological research, applied techniques, and economic assessments to provide organic growers with relevant information for using sustainable techniques to help manage plant and insect pest communities.
