A skillathon is an event to test knowledge of specific subject matter. The Ingham County 4-H Skillathon will include all animal projects (beef, cat, cavy, dairy, dog, goat, horse, poultry, rabbit, sheep, swine). Compete individually AND/OR as a team. Available Contest Dates and Times – location TBD – at the fairgrounds. Sunday, July 30th – 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday, July 31st to Thursday, August 3rd – 9:00 a.m. to noon. Friday, August 4th – Team Challenge only offered – 9:00 a.m. to noon. Friday, August 4th – Large Animal Little International – Awards will be announced. Michigan State University Extension logo. A skillathon is an event to test knowledge of specific subject matter.  The Ingham County 4-H Skillathon will include all animal projects (beef, cat, cavy, dairy, dog, goat, horse, poultry, rabbit, sheep, swine).

Available Contest Dates and Times – location to be determined – at the fairgrounds

Sunday, July 30th – 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Monday, July 31st to Thursday, August 3rd – 9:00 a.m. to noon

Friday, August 4th – Team Challenge only offered – 9:00 a.m. to noon

Friday, August 4th – Large Animal Little International – Awards will be announced

RULES

1.       All youth ages 8 – 19 (as of January 1, 2023) are eligible to compete. 

2.       Youth will be divided as needed according to age based on participation.

3.       Skillathon participants are not permitted to bring study materials or electronic devices (including but not limited to cell phones and smart watches) into the Skillathon area.

4.       Photography and/or video recording of stations is strictly forbidden and may result in the disqualification of associated youth participants.

5.       Youth may choose to which project areas they would like to compete in.

6.       Only contestants or those adults assisting with the contest will be permitted in the competition area.

7.       Contestants shall not wear any hats.

8.       If a participant requires any accommodations, please contact me in advance at weissgle@msu.edu and I will work with you to make accommodations.

9.       You do not have to exhibit a particular species to participate in that species skillathon.

10.   Youth may choose their contest dates and times from those available.

11.   Placing medals will be awarded

12.   Participants must compete during the posted times of the event.

TEAMS

1.       Teams may consist of up to four (4) members, but only the top three (3) individual overall scores will be included in the team overall score. 

a.       All members of a four person team will compete, but the member receiving the lowest overall score will automatically be declared the alternate.  The alternate’s scores will not be included in any of the team totals, but will be considered in making all individual awards.

b.       Teams consisting of three members will not have an alternate and all members’ scores will count towards individual and team awards.

2.       Individual members of a team will complete the skillathon for all of the species.

3.       Placing medals will be awarded for teams.

4.       All team members must be present during the “Team Challenge” portion of the contest.

a.       Teams will work through the Team Challenge together

b.       Teams will be given an scenario to work through during the Team Challenge and submit one final paper.

MASTER STOCKMAN

1.       Youth participating in the Master Stockman contest will participate in all species individual skillathon contests (beef, cat, cavy, dairy, dog, goat, horse, poultry, rabbit, sheep, swine).

2.       Each species will have equal weight when determining the Master Stockman.

3.       Youth with the top total score in two age categories will receive a belt buckle.
