Each year, the MSU Regional Economic Innovation (REI) University Center organizes the Innovate Michigan! Summit, a conference that brings together economic experts and enthusiasts alike to share, learn, and create unique and innovative approaches to economic development and revitalization in the State of Michigan.

This year’s Innovate Michigan! Summit is scheduled for Thursday Sept. 4 at the MSU Kellogg Center (see the program and registration information at

The Summit provides a platform for idea generation, networking, and discussion, and gives REI the chance to summarize their work from the past year, with speakers and presenters sharing various new economic development practices. Dr. David Bieri from the University of Michigan, for example, will lead a discussion on the implementation of a database to track the effects Tax Increment Financing programs (TIFS). Another speaker, Dr. Edward Lorenz of Alma College, will promote Cooperative Enterprises in Distressed Urban and Rural Communities.

In addition to a series of sessions involving faculty and students from Michigan’s higher education community engaged in community and economic development, this year’s keynote speaker, Ayleen Robainas Barcia, from Havana Cuba, will be visiting the United States discussing developments in Havana. We are very excited about Dr.Robainas’s presentation it is a rare opportunity for us to hear first hand what is happening in Cuba and the challenges and opportunities they are facing in community and economic development.
