The Michigan Conservation Stewards Program, an adult education and volunteerism program, has recently begun a transition to a blended learning instructional format in order to allow for greater time to be allocated to field instruction during in-person sessions. In order to gain a better understanding of how to best teach adult learners using the blended learning approach, the purpose of this proposed project is twofold: (1) to create online content for the Ecology Unit and (2) to evaluate this content after its pilot run. The first phase of this project consists of both adapting old course material and creating new material, resulting in the creation of online content in the form of video lectures and various activities for the Ecology Unit. The second phase is that of evaluation, which will be done through the analysis of various forms of feedback gathered throughout the six-week program. This includes information collected through session observations, pre- and post-session survey questions, online activity completion and login data, etc. Once the online material has been evaluated, the findings will then be used to inform a set of recommendations centered upon ways in which to improve the online portions of the program in the future, with specific emphasis on the Ecology Unit.
