Abstract

Working toward a reduction of phosphorus runoff in the western Lake Erie basin, a farmer-led watershed organization known as the Farmers Advisory Committee (FAC) was formed in 2014 in the River Raisin watershed west of Lake Erie. Only a small percentage of farmers in the watershed are present in the group. This study seeks to better understand the reasons for farmers to a) join the FAC and b) what factors contribute to their continual participation. The research will be conducted in two phases: 1) participant observation at Lake Erie field days, and 2) group interviews with farmers, environmental professionals, and agricultural business professionals who are involved with the FAC. The ultimate goal of the study is to refine the FAC and foster more participation from farmers in the watershed, resulting in improved phosphorus reduction through promotion of best management practices.
