MSU and industry researchers will discuss current issues impacting dry beans and sugarbeets at the Saginaw Valley Research and Extension Center in Frankenmuth, MI. Growers will have the opportunity to learn about weed and insect resistance issues, varietal advances and production practices in dry bean, soil fertility strategies and pathology issues in sugarbeet. Additionally, after the field tour, growers and other industry partners are invited to a Centennial Celebration in the collaboration of sugarbeet research between USDA ARS and Michigan State University.

Field presentations (9 a.m. to noon):

  • Nutrients and sugarbeet quality – Kurt Steinke, associate professor in the Department of Plant, Soil, and Microbial Sciences at MSU
  • Herbicide-resistant weed concerns in dry bean and sugarbeet – Christy Sprague, professor in the Department of Plant, Soil, and Microbial Sciences at MSU
  • Sugarbeet agronomy and research update – Corey Guza, director of agronomy and research, Michigan Sugar Company
  • Dry bean production and variety advancement – Scott Bales, dry bean systems specialist, MSU and Michigan Dry Bean Commission
  • Sugarbeet pathology issues – Linda Hanson, research plant pathologist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Services (ARS) and adjunct associate professor in the Department of Plant, Soil, and Microbial Sciences at MSU, and Jaime Willbur, assistant professor in the Department of Plant, Soil, and Microbial Sciences at MSU
  • Update on BT resistance in insects – Chris Difonzo, professor in the Department of Entomology at MSU

After lunch, stay for the Centennial Celebration of the Collaboration in Sugarbeet Research of the USDA ARS and MSU. This celebration will begin at 1 p.m. highlighting the accomplishments and current program of the USDA ARS sugarbeet program. Additionally, participants will be able to tour the historical progress of sugarbeet breeding. The celebration will conclude by 3:30 p.m. with a cake and ice cream social.

Recertification credits have been approved for Certified Crop Advisor (three credits) and Private, Commercial Core, and Category 1A Pesticide Applicator Licenses (three credits).
