MSU Sochi Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony Event

The School of Planning, Design and Construction (SPDC) and the Eli Broad College of Business welcomes the MSU community to come view the Opening Ceremony of the Sochi Winter Olympics on Friday, Feb. 7 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., in Room C107 (Kiva) of McDonel Hall in East Lansing.
The program will start at 10 a.m. with presentations by MSU professors SPDC’s Dr. Eva Kassens-Noor (Planning and Logistics of the Olympics), Lisa Robinson (Identity and Gender at the Sochi Olympics), SPDC’s Dr. Mark Wilson (History of Opening Ceremonies) and visiting assistant professor Joseph Potchen, JD (Legal Issues of the Olympics). At 11am, the Opening Ceremony will be viewed live via the CBC.
During the Opening Ceremony, attendees are encouraged to use social media to offer their insights and views on the unfolding events. The official Twitter hashtag will be #MSUSOCHI, or tweet to @MEPupdates, and post to the “Mega Event Planning Group” on Facebook, where participants will be live tweeting and Facebook posting the Opening Ceremony. For those who have enrolled in the MOOC (Massive Open Online Course), “Mega Events: Inside the Winter Olympics” may use the online course’s discussion forum.
Registration is still available for the free MOOC. This five-week non-credit course is available to take at anytime during this time period (Jan. 27-March 1). Modules take about 20-30 minutes to complete and feature short quizzes, and participants are able to earn medals of distinction online.
