The Michigan State University Department of Forestry is accepting applications for an Academic Outreach Specialist for Sustainable Bio-Products.
Under the supervision of the MSU Department of Forestry leadership, the Sustainable Bio-Products Specialist (SBPS) will work collaboratively with Landscape Services, Recycling Center and Campus Sustainability to develop and maintain a chain of custody process for wood from MSU tree removals. The specialist will supervise the labeling and sorting process of stored logs, and develop and determine a system for assigning available wood resources to best suited production pathways based on their value and/or pre-established orders from local wood workers and artisans. The SBPS will assist in the production and drying process of wood and supervise and maintain processing equipment, labs and storage space on campus.
The SBPS also will work in close collaboration with the Recycling Center, MSU and Forestry Alumni Associations to develop branding and marketing for products manufactured through the program. The SBPS will be responsible for safety, risk management, and environmental compliance programs within his/her area of responsibility.
Bachelors of Science degree in Forestry or related field; Good knowledge of tree and wood identification, log and lumber grading and good understanding of wood based products manufacturing processes; Good interpersonal and communication skills; Good working knowledge of Excel, Word, and other common statistical software used for data analysis. M.S. in Forestry or related field is preferred.
