Fallingwater Landscape Internship Program - Western Pennsylvania Conservancy

Hiring Organization: Western Pennsylvania Conservancy
Employment type: Full-Time
Job Location: Mill Run, PA
Application Deadline: January 15, 2018

Fallingwater, the architectural masterwork designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, seeks applications for its Fallingwater Landscape Internship Program. This full-time summer residency intern will interact with Fallingwater’s horticulture specialist, maintenance department, visiting consultants, and vendors while working in and around a historic house museum environment.

Job Description

Interns will be exposed to a variety of native species of plant life and natural landscape situations on the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy’s 5,000 acre Bear Run Nature Reserve, in which Fallingwater is located. Interns will conceive and implement design project schemes for Fallingwater’s woodland garden landscape. Past intern projects have included the creation of an herb garden for the Fallingwater Café, a wedding garden for the Barn at Fallingwater, and landscaping of a wheelchair accessible pathway. Interns are expected to participate in hands-on routine practices such as weeding, planting, pruning, and the like that may require light lifting. The landscape intern primarily works outdoors in a variety of weather and climate conditions, so proper attire is required.

Applicants may be either an advanced undergraduate student or be a current or entering graduate student in landscape architecture, horticulture, landscape contracting, or related field of study. Previous work experience in an outdoor landscape setting is preferred.

Position Duration

Ten to twelve weeks, beginning around May 15, 2018. Interns will be expected to work during normal business hours (typically Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 5:00pm), forty hours per week.

Fallingwater is located in rural Mill Run, Pennsylvania (zip code 15464), and is approximately ninety miles from the Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT). Having a motor vehicle is strongly recommended, as there are no stores or amenities within walking distance.

This is an hourly paid internship that includes free, onsite shared housing. Interns are required to provide their own food, linens, laundry supplies, and incidentals.

How to Apply

To apply, email cover letter, resume, and two letters of reference (academic or employer) to wpcjobs@paconserve.org and list Landscape Intern in the subject line. Application deadline is January 15, 2018.
