Lansing City Market is Mid-Michigan’s oldest public market in continuous operation, earning our longevity andreputation for the very best in Midwestern hospitality by being good neighbors year in and year out, since 1909. The Market’s recent reconstruction along the Grand River has strengthened Lansing’s downtown corridor by creating a welcoming home for more than 20 merchants. Currently the Market features a wide variety of goods including: local produce, fresh dairy products, artisan cheese, house-baked breads, meat, poultry, fresh-cut flowers, hand-dipped chocolates, gelato/Italian ice, natural heath care products, gluten-free items, and a several hot-prepared food merchants including a full-service restaurant. Our mission is simple; bring the very best products, services and events to Mid- Michigan. Over the past year, the market has evolved to providing weekly nutrition education programming to community as a whole.
This member will serve as the Food Outreach Ambassador at Lansing City Market, who will:
Manage volunteers, including recruitment, training, scheduling, and evaluation for the LCM Volunteer Program
Collaborate with the Lansing City Market Manager to develop, organize, schedule, lead (as appropriate) and promote a robust series of classes and workshops targeted at the technical aspects of growing/preservation
Manage our outreach schedule and event participation
Collaborate with Lansing City Market Nutrition Specialist to incorporate gardening techniques and information to our two weekly programs- Today’s Special Program and Family Education Days
Thoroughly document the effectiveness of Lansing City Market programs through dot and paper surveys (# served, % increase in consumption of fruits and vegetables, etc.)
High school degree, GED certificate or agree to achieve GED within the year
Minimum of 18 year of age, US citizen or permanent resident status
Desire and ability to engage with a diverse group of people
Ability to function independently and in a team environment
Experience or strong interest in gardening, markets and community programming
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Flexible availability required (some night and weekends may be required)
A part time AmeriCorps member is expected to serve 900 hours between October 14, 2013 and September 19, 2014.
Members receive a $6,400 living allowance, $2,775 education award at the successful completion of the service term, and loan forbearance for qualified student loans.
Members are invited to attend monthly meetings and trainings hosted by the PWC, and Lansing Entertainment and Public Facilities Authority (LEPFA) / Lansing City Market will also make additional training opportunities available.
