In partnership with the US Forest Service, MobilizeGreen is seeking a Natural Resources Communications Assistant for the St. Paul Campus of the University of Minnesota. The U.S. Forest Service's Northeastern Area manages programs that provide funding and professional advice to improve the health of both public and private forests. Those assisted include forest landowners, tree owners in cities and towns, non-profit conservation and greening organizations, universities, state agencies, tribes, and natural resource managers. Program staff identify educational needs and develop informational products and training to address them. In partnership with MobilizeGreen, the U.S. Forest Service seeks to hire a Resource Assistant intern who will help with these educational efforts.


Interns will primarily work with the Urban and Community Forestry program to create and deliver informational products that are far-reaching and impactful in the Northeastern and Midwestern United States. Interns will gain experience in outreach, science delivery, marketing, and project management.

  • Full-time (40 hrs/week) for six months.
  • Start date negotiable between October 23, 2017 and January 2, 2018.
  • Interns must complete at least 960 hours to be eligible to compete for internal U.S. Forest Service jobs.

Duties & Responsibilities

Major duties will include the following:

  • Compile science-based information and create written, graphical, and/or video summaries suited for the target audience.
  • Develop and implement product marketing and dissemination plans.
  • Share outcomes from grant-funded projects.
  • Identify and evaluate the potential of non-traditional, innovative mechanisms for education and delivery of science-based information.
  • Solicit stakeholder input regarding education needs.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of various outreach efforts.

Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent communication skills, in particular writing skills.
  • Educational background in natural resources, environmental science, marketing, communications, or public relations.
  • Ability to use technology to effectively communicate, market, and disseminate information.
  • Ability and willingness to work independently as well as on teams.
  • Willingness to take initiative and motivation to seek new learning opportunities.
  • Recent college graduates with a bachelor's degree are preferred, but current students are encouraged to apply.


  • Participants must have a laptop computer with WiFi internet capabilities that can be used for work performed in the position.
  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident

Work Environment

The work environment presents normal, every-day risks or discomforts typical of offices, meeting rooms, and travel situations. There may be occasional travel within a few hours of the metropolitan area but few, if any, overnight trips.
