We are looking for a self-motivated intern with a positive attitude and good work ethic for an organic apple orchard in Ann Arbor.
Maintain a young (three year) 1100 organic dwarf apple tree orchard grown using the principals of Permaculture. Spray apple trees weekly using compost tea mixture. Plant companion plants. Maintain the swales and mulch the mounds. Water trees weekly as required. Keep the materials in the barn organized. Keep the barn clean and orderly. Conduct microscopic work to ensure that the xxx is good for xxx . Ensure actions are taking to counter various pests that can affect apple trees. Promotes the proper growth of trees and maintains the overall health of the orchard.
Performs under the supervision of the Farm Owner and is responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties:
Organic Grower participate in all aspects of the apple orchard from record-keeping, planting, weeding, mulching, harvest, and washing and packing produce. Would be working independently, need hardworking, motivated individual.
Experience with outdoor or production work is useful. We are looking for interns who like working with people, can follow directions and work independently, and are eager to learn. Ability to lift 50 lbs, and willingness to work long hours in peak seasons and outdoors in all weather conditions required. No on-farm housing currently.
Minimum Qualifications Training and Experience (position requirements at entry) High school diploma or
equivalent. Bachelor's degree or working towards one from an accredited college or university with a major in urban forestry, forestry, horticulture, arboriculture, natural resources, landscape maintenance or related field. Must be at least 18 years of age.
Valid driver's license at time of application. Certifications that can help perform the Organic Grower position will be a plus.
Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Ability to safely and operate a motor vehicle as incumbents are subject to daily local travel to and from work locations. Operate automated sprayer and mow orchard paths regularly.
