Job Description This position is located in Charlottesville, Virginia with responsibility for the Urban and Community Forestry grant program of the Virginia Department of Forestry. The position provides professional assistance, as a scientific expert, in program delivery in the areas of: urban and community forestry; arboriculture; green infrastructure land use planning; natural resources management; watershed and riparian forest management; and conservation education.

Duties include: administration of the Urban and Community Forestry grant program, coordination of the Tree City USA program developing and fostering various activities that promote the importance of trees and forests to an urban audience; developing and utilizing partnerships with Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO’s), businesses, civic organizations, and other community groups to deliver forest education and conservation information.

Minimum Qualifications B.S. Degree in Natural Resources Management or related field required. Ability to work independently; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with personnel from various state and federal agencies, local planners, partners, and the public; public speaking skills and experience; effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills; proficient with Excel and PowerPoint as well and other Microsoft Office programs and valid driver’s license required. Must be willing and able to travel around the state and stay overnight on occasion. Selected candidate should be able to acquire the ISA Arborist certification and maintain this certification.

Preferred Qualifications Master’s Degree in Environmental Planning strongly preferred.

Special Requirements Selected candidate is expected to certify as an Urban Forest Strike Team member and preferably as a Team Leader with the ISA-Tree Risk Assessment Qualification. Selected candidate is required to be fingerprinted and pass a criminal background check.
