The Education Department develops and delivers curriculum-based instruction with a focus on garden design, horticulture and horticulture-related arts to a continuum of learners from 5 to 85+ years old. Reporting to the President & Chief Executive Officer (CEO), this position serves as a contributing member of the senior management team and assists the President & CEO in making decisions that support Longwood’s mission. The Vice President of Education assures the effective operation and advancement of the Education Department which is comprised of five divisions: School (K-12) & Youth Programs, Domestic & International Studies, Longwood Fellowship Program, Continuing Education, and Library & Information Services. The Vice President leads Longwood’s onsite and online educational programs, sharing of intellectual capital, and collection and heritage management of Longwood’s Library, archives, and digital assets. We seek a leader whose professional career and life-long passion has been devoted to inspiring others to learn in ways that utilize novelty and originality in program design, delivery and social impact. This person will demonstrate a keen understanding of the contemporary application of STEAM theory and practice preferably at levels which include children, youth and adult learners as well as teachers and curriculum designers. A high priority will be given to candidates who have built a successful track record of innovative, forward thinking educational leadership. Experience may include positions in audience-driven, destination-based venues such as public gardens and arboreta, science and technology centers, zoological parks and aquaria, children’s museums and themed-based “edu-tainment” enterprises or at an institution of higher learning in the capacity of Department Chair or higher.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to build and sustain a culture of highperforming teamwork, mission-driven results and an openness to innovation, prudent risktaking and a personal-best staff development approach. Experience as an effective and dynamic speaker in groups that range from horticultural professionals to university faculty and from corporate executives to community stakeholders is a key factor in the success of this position. International travel, either personal or business-related, along with the experience of interacting with different peoples and cultures globally, including the use of languages other than English, is highly preferred.
We seek a person who is familiar with the technologies used in 21st Century learning environments. Ideally, this would include the use of distance learning platforms, digital content, interactive video and systems that support multiple open online distribution networks. Knowledge of curriculum design utilizing virtual instructional capabilities would be highly desirable.
A minimum of ten years of management-level leadership is required. A graduate degree from an accredited university is also required. A doctoral or terminal degree in a discipline such as education, science or museum management is a plus.
