History

The concept of centralizing the maintenance and operations of MSU's off-campus properties, to provide adequate facilities and equipment for research and education and to improve community relations, was developed in the late 1970's by then Vice President for Operations and Public Affairs Jack Breslin and then Associate Director of the Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station, Dr. Jacob Hoefer.   The office officially opened in July of 1979 with C. Gerald Haarer as Director and Jean Peterson as his administrative assistant.   Within a short time Bary Darling was added as the manager of the University Farms and Allen Brace as the Assistant Director.
