Let's get to it!

Chopped Food Challenge: Day 1

IMG_6053Flag Ceremony & C.A.R.E.S.

Welcome to Chopped! Not the famed TV show with professional chefs, but our lovely campers! Today being the first day, we got to introduce our campers to each other. Afterward, we all went up to the flagpole to conduct the morning flag ceremony. One group of campers gets to hold the flag while one leads the entirety of the ceremony. It is good practice for learning how to talk to large crowds! We all went back down to talk about our CARES (Cooperation, Attitude, Respect, Empathy, and Safety) rules, which the campers must follow during their week at camp. We gave good examples with the help of our Stewards and S.I.T. (Stewards in Training).

Even though our chopped week deals with recipe making, we still are MSU Tollgate Farm, so animal chores are a must-do for every morning. All the groups get to interact and learn about one animal each morning of camp, and today I followed one group who went to go meet our Tollgate farm goats, one in particular, name Sage. We got to give Sage some food and then the campers set about learning how to milk a goat, which they did perfectly! Sage got some special treats and plenty of pats.

A time-honored tradition for our summer camps, each camper got a t-shirt that they tied with rubber bands, rinsed in water, then sprayed with colors. All campers took their t-shirts home, and it is highly recommended to keep the t-shirt in the bag overnight before rinsing and washing. By the end of the week, we get to wear them as part of Tie-Dye Friday!

Htipiti & Mac n' CheeseIMG_6093

You might think the first word of this section is not a word at all. In fact, it is actually a Greek name for the delicious feta cheese and red pepper spread, of which the texture is not unlike hummus! It definitely tastes very different from Hummus, as it does include feta cheese. For our afternoon snack, we made a Vegan Mac n' Cheese that had no cheese at all! each camper will go home with both recipes of the day, and at the end of this week, there will be a post of the entire week's recipes.

IMG_6151Farm to Plate

This was an activity that was based around matching the label to the pictures, and discussing how foods can come from the farm to your plate, and what kinds of processes do they go through before and after. Each camper got to try and pair an image with the label that represented it,

This is also a safari, learning more about what the farm has growing around, as well as what kinds of animals eat said foods. Some groups walked close to our pond, where we were luck enough to see some geese that were swimming in the water. Others went to our tiny waterfall that grows lots of algae that a lot of tiny critters thrive on. Some campers saw a lot of bees along their path, since the paths here are lined with different kinds of flowers and wildflowers.

IMG_6130STEAM: Chopped Food Recipe Planning

This week on Chopped Camp Week! The campers got to pick three ingredients from our Garden Kitchen leader to use in a recipe that the entire group has to come up with and make by Friday, where their meals will be judged by a panel of special guests and will also decide which camp group had the best recipe! From salads to soups and burgers in between, which camper group will be supreme? Stay tuned each day to see if you can guess!
