Chopped Food Challenge: Day 4

IMG_6386Bunnies!

There are a trio of bunnies that live on our lovely farm, named respectively Eleanor, Stella, and Bella. These friends of ours are not here to give us eggs or milk, but they are here to teach our campers about how to treat a smaller animal more gently than our bigger goat or chicken. The campers sit in a circle, knees touching, and the bunnies are brought out one at a time, and as the hop around the circle, the campers pet them gently. It is really amazing to know just how much the bunnies help the campers learn this skill.

Newspaper PotsIMG_6376

This was a really fun activity where we got to take sheets of old newspaper, then fold it into a tiny little pot that was taped together to keep it steady, then we put potting soil down. The newspaper functions as a biodegradable pot that you can stick into the ground, or a bigger pot where you can keep it. It Is a great way to reuse old pieces of paper and to save the environment by not creating more waste.

IMG_6423Mini CSA Visit

Yesterday we harvested a lot of vegetables, that we separated and rationed out into paper bags for our CSA customers. CSA Stands for Community Support Agriculture, where as part of the group every week, you get a portion of the harvest that we grow. This was a mini version of the one that occurs every Wednesday, that is prepackaged and ready to take. Each camper got to stamp each bag with the Tollgate Farm logo, put the vegetables in an set it out on the tables.

Fruit Rolls & SmoothiesIMG_6374

One really nice way to start a morning, is by giving yourself a meal filled with vitamin-rich fruits. We stuffed our kiwis, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and some mint, all mixed with honey, into a rice paper wrap to make our yummy Fruit Spring Rolls. The Chocolate Strawberry Smoothie was our awesome to-go meal for the end of the day, since we had a lot of activities and not enough time to make it!

IMG_6396Seed Bombs

What a messy activity! The campers got some dirt into a bucket, and by adding little drops of water at a time, creating a giant bucket of mud. Them the campers got to take one handful to roll into a ball, nd putting on a tinfoil plate to dry. Once all those steps were done, we took tiny wildflower seeds that were native to this state, and placed them into the mud ball. Once completely dried, you can take the ball, throw it on the ground you want to plant the seeds, and the ball disintegrates, and the seeds go directly into the ground.

Moo to You!IMG_6398

What goes into your lunch? Lets deconstruct it to find out where all the foods come from! We used different examples of foods and materials, that the campers learned, all came from a cow! The leather, the meat, and the milk can all be used to make so many things, that its important we appreciate the cows that they come from. the campers took turns guessing what part of the cow was being used.

IMG_6419STEAM: Meal Prep

This afternoon we used that same time in the kitchen to prepare all of our ingredients for cooking tomorrow's Chopped Food Challenge! The campers got busy chopping all different kinds of vegetables that will be present in each of their meals that they present to their judges tomorrow, and each group keeps their recipe a secret from the others, as to not cheat. We shall see what they have made finally tomorrow! And will our judges give a camp group the ultimate perfect score? Stay tuned for the final day of our Chopped Food Challenge!
