2023 Animal Science Camp Day 1

Here's what our campers are up to during week two of summer camp! Animal Science Camp 2023.

Animal Camp Week 2!

Happy second week of camp!

We had such a relaxing week off to be with friends and family but everyone is ready to have another fun week of camp!

C.A.R.E.S

Before camp starts for the day, we always start with a flag ceremony and go over our CARES Act. C: cooperation, A: Attitude, R: Respect, E: Empathy, and S: Safety. It’s important to teach our campers how to be kind, respectful and follow the safety rules of MSU Tollgate. All the SIT’s and Stewards demonstrated the CARES Act to each pepper group. Campers and parents sign a paper listing the CARES Act, to show they acknowledged it!

Wagon Ride

Our lovely EDU Leaders took their pepper groups on a fun wagon ride this morning. They got to see more of the farm and showing them where each station will be during the week!

Tie Dye and Parachute

To kick off the fun of camp, everyone gets to tie dye a camp shirt! Our amazing EDU Leaders and Stewards helped with making sure each camper could tie dye a shirt. It does require some patience, but each pepper group did so well with taking turns. Also, to pass the time, they played with a big parachute.

Animal Chores: Horses, Goats and Rabbits

Caring for the animals is so important here at MSU Tollgate! Our green pepper groups got to groom our pony, Sesame, and learned all about the different brushes used to clean her. They even helped sweep the barn where the horses Sedona and Grizz live, it’s all clean now! Aside from walking the baby goats, the yellow pepper group weighed them today to see how big they’ve gotten. Since the older goats got milked already campers got to feed one and pet it today! Some campers were protecting our bunny Eleanor from the sun when they were playing with her and Stella.

Garden Kitchen: Cheese Tasting and Banana smoothie

It’s snack time here on the farm and everyone’s favorite: garden kitchen! Campers learn how to make yummy snacks everyday in the morning and afternoon. At the end of the week, they will be able to take a mini recipe book home with everything they’ve made! Today campers taste tasted cheddar cheese, feta cheese and goat cheese with some crackers. Then later, they got a yummy banana smoothie with yogurt, cinnamon, oat milk and frozen bananas. It was a refreshing treat, and they want more smoothies!

Ruminant Stomach/ Skit practice

IMG_7096.jpg

In the lower barn, campers learned about all the different parts of a cow and how they have four parts to their stomach for food. There were buckets for campers to feel the texture of each part of a cow. After they got to come up with what skit they’re going to show everyone on Friday! It’s a fun way to show parents what their kids have been up to this week! They had a blast!!

STEAM: Creature Creation: Design and planning

Campers became animal explorers to find a new species. They’ll use their knowledge of plants and animal characteristics to draw a new species in a new habitat they created. Towards the end of the week campers will create a clay figure of their drawing.

Sheep to sweater

Everyone had a blast learning about sheep and their wool today! Our EDU Leaders explained if the sheep’s wool doesn’t get sheared since they’re in the wild, the sheep will look like a cloud! They even showed the shears used to get the wool. Then, they were able to create bracelets from the wool and dip it in Kool-Aid that they can take home with them! The campers had so much fun making their bracelets today!

And that's a wrap on Animal Science day 1. Stay tuned for tomorrow!!
