2023 Outdoor Adventure Camp Day 1

Welcome to day one!

Outdoor Adventure at Tollgate Farm Part I

Campers at the 2023 Outdoor Adventure Camp have a blast learning wilderness survival skills and testing their limits. 12-14 year old's not only learn important survival skills like how to build a fire and how to signal for help in an emergency, they also bond with fellow campers through team-building activities and skill-building challenges. It is through these challenging outdoor experiences that campers build confidence and resilience that help them face challenges in their lives ahead.

Monday, campers tie-dyed t-shirts and explored SURVIVAL is an attitude. Each letter in the word ‘survival’ took on a new meaning as we explore important principles that will help us survive. Campers decorated banners that will be used as the backdrop for our Leave No Trace skits at the camp closing this Friday.

Each day at camp is packed with hands-on activities to keep campers engaged and active, including our Monday welcome wagon ride out to the forest to tackle a wilderness first aid challenge and teambuilding activities called the Blind Square Rope and the 2 Leg Plank walk.

For garden kitchen, campers made delicious fruit smoothies of mixed berries, applesauce, and maple syrup. Using some of the same blend, campers explored why those who venture into the wilderness dehydrate their food and proceeded to make our very own fruit leather for later in the week.

We look forward to shelter-building, fire-building, rock-climbing, slack line, outdoor cooking, and our road trip to paddle and tube the Huron River!

Outdoor Adventure Camp Part II

Campers explored STEM principles, the 10 Essentials, and how to survive if lost in the woods. Campers love fishing, making fire-starters, and shelter-building, but what sets Outdoor Adventure Camp apart for our slightly older campers is an exciting day trip to kayak the Huron River and tube down the Argo Cascades, a rock wall experience, the slack line, and a foraging hike.

The pinnacle experience for our OAC campers is tent camping together on the farm. A forest archery shoot and cooking their own dinners over an open fire create excitement and fun for campers. Before they say goodbye on their final day, campers show off and critique their shelters and perform their Leave No Trace skits, leaving the farm with new skills and good friends.
