Art Cameron appointed Interim Gardens Director at MSU

Acting Horticulture Department Chair Randy Beaudry has appointed Art Cameron, Professor of Horticulture, as interim Director of the Michigan State University Horticulture Gardens. These include the Annual Trial Gardens, the DeLapa Perennial Display gardens, the Rose Gardens, the 4-H Children's Garden and the C.E. Lewis Arboretum.

As director, Art will work to enhance the educational and outreach components related to the gardens, develop the ornamental appeal and diversity, develop and expand fund-raising opportunities, and act as a public liaison for general garden activities. Art has also assumed responsibility for the Annual Trial Gardens, where each year hundreds of plants are trialed to determine performance under mid-Michigan climatic conditions.

Working with Chris Noffsinger, Trials Manager, he intends to expand these trials to include promising native and drought-tolerant plants and herbaceous perennials. A longtime perennial and ornamental grass enthusiast, Art was in charge of the perennials gardens outside the old MSU Horticulture Building in the 1980s, where he spent many weekends working with volunteers to care for those gardens. He was also responsible for the initial layout of the perennial beds in the new gardens. Art's boundless energy will certainly help garner more publicity for, and utility of, the MSU display gardens. For more information, contact Art by phone at 517-355-5191 ext 338 or by E-mail at cameron@msu.edu.
