Graduate student positions are available for multidisciplinary projects in the Department of Forestry at Michigan State University. The successful candidates will be involved in highly multidisciplinary research and will receive training in biomass chemistry, chemometric modeling and development of biobased resins. The proposed projects are in close collaboration with industry partners and focus on development of lignin‐based bioproducts for application in foams, coatings and adhesives. Graduate students will assist in finding applications for lignin as byproducts of pulp and paper and the bioethanol industry, while developing sustainable raw materials for the polymeric industry.
The candidate should have:
- Undergraduate degree in chemistry or chemical engineering (for master’s student) or master’s degree relevant to the topic of the study for PhD student
- Previously attained and maintained exceptional academic standing (min GPA 3.5 on 4.0 scale)
- Have a TOEFL score of 81 iBT and GRE (TOEFL for students with non‐English credentials only)
- Be self‐motivated, well organized and adaptive to a team of multidisciplinary researchers
Additionally, candidates need to meet the minimum requirements outlined by Michigan State University’s Graduate program.
The successful PhD candidate will be supported for four years and a master’s student will receive support for two years. Assistantships include:
- A bi‐weekly stipend, determined by prior experience and education levels. In the first year, a master’s student’s stipend will be approximately $25,000 and a PhD student’s stipend would be approximately $28,000.
- A tuition waiver of up to nine credits per semester fall and spring and five credits during the summer with out‐of‐state tuition waiver for students who take more than the covered number of credits each semester
- Enrollment in the University's graduate health insurance plan
