The LPI’s Planning & Zoning Center will offer the next Zoning Administrator Certificate (ZAC) Program Jan. 18–19, 2018, at the Ramada Grayling Hotel and Conference Center in Grayling.

This certificate-based training is recommended for all new and current Zoning Administrators, along with private consultants, state agency field staff, and county planners who consult with local Zoning Administrators.

To be eligible for a certificate upon completion of the training program, participants will need to have also completed one of the Program Prerequisites: 1) MSUE Michigan Citizen Planner Fundamentals, or 2) AICP certification. Why do we require these prerequisites?

  • Many zoning administrators come to their positions without a background in planning or zoning.
  • It provides a common starting point in local planning and zoning knowledge for all participants.
  • It’s a good refresher for those who are familiar and gets us ready to dive deeper into the Zoning Administrator Certificate training.
  • The ZAC Program can spend less time on review and offer more new information.

One positive result of this requirement is that many past participants appreciated the refresher and, therefore, the ZAC Program continues to partner with Michigan Citizen Planner.

So, for those who have their eye on a Zoning Administrator Certificate in 2018, check out these two steps to take right now:

  1. Register for ZAC in Grayling for Jan. 18–19, 2018, which is currently open, so you can secure your seat.

  2. If you are not AICP certified or a graduate of the Michigan Citizen Planner Program, then explore and/or register for the upcoming Citizen Planner training opportunities to help satisfy the prerequisite.

Also, be sure to peruse the information available online about the ZAC program, including why take ZAC, topics covered and sample agendas, fees and scholarship opportunities, how to prepare for the program, meet the instructors, and more.
