Behind every great athlete is a great coach, behind every entrepreneur should be a great mentor

SCORE offers the nation's largest network of free, expert business mentors.

From start-up to seasoned professional, business owners and entrepreneurs need cheerleaders in their corner. Michigan State University Extension partner Northern Lakes Economic Alliance (NLEA) works closely with entrepreneurs that need a wide range of assistance. On a daily basis, NLEA refers entrepreneurs to a local SCORE chapter made up of counselors with a wide range of professional knowledge and experience.

SCORE is a national group of retired and semi-retired business professionals that offer free and confidential guidance and resources. SCORE volunteers come from every facet of the business community; some have worked at large corporations; while others have served in our military or worked for the local or federal government; and even more, spending years cultivating their own small businesses.

They team up with local chambers of commerce and economic organizations to handle clients in all levels of business, but their wheelhouse remains in those entrepreneurs that have a business idea and need assistance to get to that next step. Many of SCORE’s tools come from the Small Business Administration, as well as the large network of SCORE chapters throughout the U.S.

In Northwest Michigan there are two local SCORE chapters that are available depending on your location. To learn more about SCORE and their free counseling services call or visit the Tip of the Mitt or Traverse City SCORE chapter websites:

Michigan State University Extension has had a unique relationship with the regional economic development organization Northern Lakes Economic Alliance (NLEA) for more than 20 years. Recognizing the strength of combining resources, this partnership focuses on economic development, entrepreneurship growth and community infrastructure throughout a four-county region in the northwest Lower Peninsula, specifically Antrim, Charlevoix, Cheboygan and Emmet counties. As a result, the NLEA utilizes resources offered through MSU Extension as it provides leadership to state-wide programs sponsored by MSU Extension.”
