Joseph Byrum and Thomas Snyder, both alumni from the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, will be recognized with Outstanding Alumni Awards by the CANR Alumni Association.

Joseph Byrum and Thomas Snyder, both alumni from the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, will be recognized with Outstanding Alumni Awards by the CANR Alumni Association. They will be honored during the ANR Week Luncheon set for March 8 at the Kellogg Center.
Byrum, global head of product development for Syngenta, will receive the Outstanding Alumnus Award. The award is given annually to an alumnus who distinguishes him- or herself by achieving the highest level of professional accomplishments and who possesses the highest standards of integrity and character.
Byrum received his bachelor’s degree in crop and soil sciences and a master’s degree in genetics, both from MSU. He received his doctoral degree in genetics from Iowa State University and an MBA from the University of Michigan. He has worked with Syngenta on plant breeding and decreasing the costs of genetic gains.
Snyder is president of Silgan Containers, located in Woodland Hills, California. He is a 1990 graduate from the School of Packaging and an Adrian, Michigan, native.
After promotions to vice president of sales and marketing and executive vice president, Snyder was named president in October 2007. He is actively involved in the Grocery Manufacturers Association and is chairman of the board for the Can Manufacturing Institute.
At MSU, Snyder is chair of the advisory board for the School of Packaging. He established a recurring process for Silgan Containers to recruit and hire MSU graduates from the School of Packaging in 2007, and regularly hires MSU students as interns.
