Dr. Joe Vargas was selected to be inducted into the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame. He has worked on every continent except Antartica to improve the quality of turf over a 46 year career at Michigan State University, producing over 200 articles on turfgrass diseases and related subjects. He wrote the widely used turfgrass disease book "Management of Turfgrass Diseases", and has presented the findings of his research over 1,000 times worldwide and is regarded as an international expert on turfgrass diseases. He was earlier honored by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America Distinguished Service Award in 1997, and his selection in 2012 for the Lifetime Service Award by Ohio State University and the Ohio Turfgrass Foundation. In addition to turf pathology work Dr. Vargas was a lead researcher in the development of a disease resistant turfgrass cultvar called Flagstick. Worldwide, more money is spent on the control of dollar spot than any other disease. Flagstick is a tool that allows for the control of dollar spot and reduces the environmental impact of fungides.
