Department of Agricultural, Food, and Resource Economics (AFRE) academic advisor Dale Elshoff has received the Walter Adams Advisor of the Year award, presented by the Department of Student Life on April 18, 2018.

The Walter Adams Advisor of the Year Award is presented to a Michigan State University (MSU) graduate student, faculty, or staff member who has displayed an exemplary level of commitment and dedication to their organization. Elshoff, AFRE advisor of two years, was nominated by fellow CANR Advisor Dustin Petty with support of members from AFRE’s Sustainable Business Association student club, for her outstanding and enthusiastic commitment to bettering students’ lives.

Elshoff was attending the Student Life Award ceremony on April 18 just to support AFRE students who were receiving awards, and was not expecting to be honored herself.

“I was shocked and incredibly honored when I heard my name called for the Walter Adams Award at the awards ceremony — I didn't expect to receive such an honor only two years into my role as an academic advisor,” said Elshoff. “That the award came from Student Life, which focuses on providing students opportunities to learn and grow outside of the classroom, fits perfectly with my philosophy on advising in higher education.”

“I was extraordinarily humbled that the nomination for the award was made by a peer and students that I work with. That’s the whole reason I’m here, to support students. I’m so glad it’s working!” said Elshoff.

An alumna of Michigan State University, Elshoff has worked with the Florida Game and Freshwater Fish Commission, the USDA- APHIS, and CSUS and Bailey Scholars Program at MSU before coming to AFRE to guide, inform, and inspire students.

Two AFRE students were also honored at the ceremony, including Holly Pummell who received the silver award for Emerging Student Leader and Alondra Alvizo for Outstanding Student Leader.
