Entomology department to celebrate National Pollinator Week with libations and discussions

The MSU Department of Entomology is hosting a number of events during National Pollinator Week, including our annual fun event for families, Bee Palooza at the MSU Horticulture Gardens.

The MSU Department of Entomology is hosting a number of events during National Pollinator Week to educate the public on the state of pollinators and pollination in Michigan. Our annual fun event for families is the Bee Palooza at the MSU Horticulture Gardens on Sunday, June 18 from 1-4 p.m. This event is for all ages and is a free, fun and educational afternoon of interactive activities centered on understanding the wonderful world of pollinators.

Later in the week, the Department of Entomology will be hosting two events for those 18 years old and older.

Biology on Tap

On June 20, researchers – students and professors -- will speak at The Loft, located at 414 E Michigan Ave., Lansing, MI 48933 to discuss the state of Michigan pollinators for Biology on Tap. The talks will be different styles as a part of a "science communication challenge" where presenters can only use photos on a slide to describe their work. Entomologists and their topics are:

  1. Adam Ingrao: Heros to Hives: A New Mission for America's Veterans
  2. Kelsey Graham: Bee Battles
  3. Logan Rowe: MI Native Bee Plants
  4. Knute Gundersen: Fatal Attraction
  5. Mario Pinilla: The Dirt on Bees
  6. Tom Wood: The Bees of English Farmland
  7. Julia Brokaw: How can you help bees?
  8. Rufus Isaacs: What are farmers doing to support bees?

The event, except the cost of drinks, is free and there will be trivia, a raffle and prizes. 

Orations and Libations

At American Fifth, located at 112 N Larch St. Lansing, MI 48912, on June 22 from 7-9 p.m. the Entomology Department will be hosting Orations and Libations and graduate student Jackie Albert will discuss her research studying the pollination of Michigan cherries. There will be time to discuss honeybees and questions from the audience. The event is free, other than the cost of your desired drink.
