Learn from the new as well as the old at the Michigan Herb Associates annual conference

The Michigan Herb Associates will host its 28th annual conference "Sensational Savory," March 13-14, during ANR Week. The conference will take place in the Business College Complex on the campus of Michigan State University.

The Michigan Herb Associates will host its 28th annual conference “Sensational Savory,” March 13-14, during ANR Week. The conference will take place in the Business College Complex on the campus of Michigan State University.

This year’s event will feature programs on herb culture, landscaping, cooking, crafts, herbal remedies, and ideas for beginners as well as on critter control in the garden. It will also focus on the herb of the year ? savory. In addition, attendees can visit educational displays, take part in a silent auction and shop at several sales.

The banquet program will feature “Garden Travelogue: Great Gardens of North America” presented by Julia Hofley. Manager and buyer of an independent garden center in eastern Michigan and a freelance garden writer for Michigan Gardener, Fine Gardening and several other publications, Hofley is also Friday’s featured speaker. Her program “Protect Your Investment: Stop Browsing Deer and Rabbits from Destroying Your Landscape” will show gardeners and homeowners who care for their lawns how to stop these animals from doing damage.

Rosalind Creasy will speak Friday and Saturday. Creasy is a well-known garden photographer, garden writer and landscape designer from Los Altos, California, and a founding pioneer of the edible landscape movement and ecologically sensitive gardening. Even long-time herb gardeners will gain many new design ideas from her Friday presentation “Landscaping with Herbs.” Her Saturday program “Growing Heirloom Herbs, Vegetables and Flowers” will feature old-fashioned edibles, herbs and flowers to grow and enjoy today.
