Professor Emeritus J. Mark Scriber is one of 22 international lepidopterists included in a new book called "The Lives of Lepidopterists." The book is a collection of anecdotes, observations and philosophies, and contains the personal and academic autobiography of Scriber. Published by Springer (edited by L.A. Dyer and M L. Forister, doi 10.1007/978-3-319-20457-4; December 2015), a copy has been donated to the MSU Entomology Department (if interested, see Linda Gallagher or Bill Ravlin). Scriber's story (Chapter 10; pp. 103-131) is titled "Tales of three tigers: A 50-year-career-shaping journey chasing swallowtail butterflies."

As a part of this diverse group of international researchers, Scriber reports he is extremely honored to have been asked to contribute his series of developmental stories from high school to post-retirement. His chapter reflects on the motivation, passion and unexpected path of several serendipitous discoveries about his career choices, including the origins of "nutritional ecology" and "hybrid speciation," and a general philosophy of life and metamorphosis.
