On Oct. 13, 2018, the MSU School of Planning, Design and Construction participated in the Design & Build Day at Impression 5 Science Museum in Lansing. This was the second year that Home Builders Association of Greater Lansing and Impression 5 organized this event, and this year, SPDC was one of the 11 participating facilitators.

More than 700 children and family members attended the event where they learned about the building industry in a hands-on environment.

At the SPDC station, participants were offered a virtual reality experience of walking through a house model that was built by Construction Management Program students. In addition, students had the opportunity of entering a “design competition” facilitated by the Interior Design Program.

Participants also learned about SPDC’s Construction Management, Interior Design, Landscape Architecture and Urban & Regional Planning Programs through children’s books and coloring activities.

“The kids were very excited, especially about the virtual reality experience, and families were awed about the use of this technology in the building industry, as well as our students’ abilities to develop such advanced models,” said Sinem Mollaoglu, PhD, associate professor of construction management.

“The day was a great experience for us all, especially our student volunteers. They frequently expressed gratitude for being a part of this experience and connecting to a larger community via their work and education at MSU.”

More than 15 students, from both SPDC undergraduate and graduate programs, and faculty volunteered during this event.
