It was one of those 'Pure Michigan' autumn days -- hardwoods in full color, not a breath of wind, crisp blue sky about an hour before sunset. This photograph (one in a series of four) was taken facing east along a 50-foot spit of land surrounded by a narrow pond, just wide enough to fully capture the 'upside-down' reflection of the woodlot growing along the opposite shoreline. Lily pads are prominent in the foreground which, when the photo is rotated 180 degrees, (i.e., as is done here, such that the woodlot faces 'right-side up') appear to be floating in the autumn sky. The sunken leaves of summer-past are faintly recalled in the shallows immediately beneath the reflective sky-surface, subtly revealing the dominant local flora.  Occasionally,  twigs and sprigs of grass pierce the sky from above and below. Here the meshing of surface, reflection and subsurface evokes a temporal perspective on the interplay of land, water and sky within which the forest thrives and features so prominently in our 'Pure Michigan.'
