The School of Planning, Design and Construction at Michigan State University invites applications for a full‐time, 9-month Continuing Academic Specialist-Advising with a 90% advising and 10% service assignment. The position start date is anticipated to be in January 2024.

This position provides academic services to undergraduate students in the School of Planning, Design and Construction (SPDC) programs of Construction Management (CM), Interior Design (ID), Landscape Architecture (LA), and Urban and Regional Planning (URP), is part of SPDC Student Services, and supports SPDC, the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR), and the College of Social Science (CSS) undergraduate program goals, missions, and initiatives. Responsibilities include advising undergraduate students; academic program planning, education abroad, career development, probation conferences, and campus resource referrals; participating in orientation initiatives and Admitted Students Day; helping with activities related to recruitment and student success; participating in prospective student visits; providing admissions support; assisting with degree certification; attending monthly Student Advisory Council (StAC) meetings; participating in commencement; and other duties as assigned.

 

An earned master’s degree (in counseling, higher education, social work, student affairs, public administration/affairs or a closely related field).

 

One to two years of experience in advising undergraduate students, or comparable experience with college/university students. Ability to interpret and implement academic policies and procedures. Demonstrated competency in the use of university technologies. Familiarity with online student information/databases and MS Excel. Excellent communication, organizational, interpersonal, problem solving, and decision-making skills. Ability to establish rapport across ethnic, racial, cultural and gender differences, as necessary.

 

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications. A summer appointment to cover New Student Orientation, up to two months, may be added to this position.
