Saginaw — Plans could transform the blighted former fairgrounds in Saginaw into a park.

The Saginaw News reports details are expected to be released this week about the effort involving the Saginaw Fairgrounds Committee.

The organization One Week, One Street, which is working to improve the city, is involved in the effort. The group’s director Tamara Klida says the Michigan State University Sustainable Built Environment Initiative has a plan for the site that’s finalized.

Klida says that it would “make the area a more desirable place to work and live.”

This plan for the 54-acre former fairgrounds on the city’s east side was created after community input.

The Saginaw County Fair began in 1866. In 2002, it moved to Chesaning and the property was sold to the Saginaw Housing Commission.
