This is our weekly southwest region apple maturity report. Reports are sent out following the Michigan State University Extension fruit team apple maturity calls on Wednesday morning. View Michigan State University Extension’s Apple Maturity page for regional reports throughout the state and additional resources.

Report overview

Later season varieties Red Delicious, Fuji, Braeburn and Evercrisp (a Honeycrisp by Fuji cross) have susceptibility to watercore. Watercore is worse in years when late harvesting and weather conditions advances fruit maturity, especially internal starch conversion. Weather conditions hastening internal starch conversion include cool nights (below 40 degrees Fahrenheit) and sunny days.

Fuji

Main season Fuji varieties are averaging 4.5 for the starch test, significantly above the starch threshold of 3, considered mature. The current area average firmness reading is 17.4 pounds, compared to the long term controlled atmosphere (CA) target value of 18 pounds, and the same as the last two weeks.  This variety appears to have matured slightly ahead of the predicted peak harvest date of Sept. 23 for central Berrien County. Brix has improved slightly since last week. A few main season Fujis have been harvested but most are still on the tree.

The current average firmness reading of 15.4 pounds is about 1 pound lower this week, and considerably below the long term CA target value of 17 pounds. The predicted peak harvest date for central Berrien County is Sept. 24. Background color is light green to yellow. Goldens have been harvested in approximately 50% of the central Berrien County area.

Apple maturity sampling parameters

  • Color % = the visual percentage of red color (blush) from 0 to 100; range is of all fruits tested.
  • Firmness in pounds pressure = measured with a FT Penetrometer; range is of all fruits tested.
  • Starch: 1 = all starch, 8 = No starch; range is of all fruits tested. Using Cornell Starch Iodine Index Chart.
  • Starch for Honeycrisp: a separate starch chart for Honeycrisp apples developed by Washington State University (scale 1-6).
  • Brix = % sugar measured with Atago PAL-1 Pocket Refractometer
