Southwest Michigan vegetable regional report – May 15, 2013

Southwest Michigan vegetables escaped major damage from May 13 frost.

Temperatures for the week averaged near normal with highs from 46 to 81 degrees Fahrenheit (normal high is 66 F) and lows from 30 to 51 F (normal low is 45 F). At the Southwest Michigan Research and Extension Center as of May 14, there have been 229 base 50 growing degree days (GDD); average GDD is 244 according to Michigan State University Extension. The area received 0.33 to 0.50 inches of rainfall during the period.

Field activities

Field preparation and plastic lying continues. Transplanting and direct seeding in unprotected fields has begun for some crops and will increase over the next week. Sandy sites are in need of additional moisture for good bed shaping to occur.

Crop reports

Asparagus harvest continues, but was slowed by cold temperatures on May 13. Some fields showed signs of frost damage, but most came through with no problems.

Sweet corn has emerged and is approximately 4 inches tall.

Peas are 6 inches tall with no flowers visible.

Vine crops under low tunnels are doing well. Transplanting and direct seeding in unprotected fields has begun.

There are no reports of peppers, eggplants or watermelon being transplanted to the field, but it should start within the week.

Cutworms and wire worms are active, but I have heard no reports of damage.
