This fall, the School of Planning, Design and Construction (SPDC) welcomes Assistant Professor Wonmin Sohn, Ph.D., to the Landscape Architecture program.

Sohn joins us from Texas A&M University where she was an instructor in the Department of Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning. She earned her doctorate in urban and regional sciences and master’s degree in landscape architecture, both from Texas A&M University. She also holds a certificate in sustainable urbanism.

Her teaching and research interests include green infrastructure, storm water management, flood-mitigation policy, hydrologic modeling, land use pattern analysis, urban resilience, and climate change.

At MSU, Sohn will be teaching courses on landscape architecture construction, low impact design, and landscape performance.

She is an active researcher with diverse experiences in landscape architecture, urban and regional planning, forestry and GIS. Her research goal is to enhance resilience of urban watersheds in response to frequent and infrequent flood events.

Sohn’s specialty lies in spatial and geostatistical analysis mainly using the Python programming language and software, including GIS, FRAGSTATS and GeoDa.

She has emphasized data-driven innovations and landscape performance in her teaching to support evidence-based design. Sohn has taught a wide spectrum of core curriculum courses in landscape architecture and urban planning programs, including site engineering, digital graphic communication, and urban and landscape design studios.

“It is my great pleasure to join SPDC. I am ready to make a positive contribution to the program, and enjoy collegial and an inclusive working environment at the school,” said Wonmin Sohn.

“I look forward to sharing my passion and creativity through new research ideas and visions with great colleagues and adding the value of collegiality. Go Green!”

She has received more than 20 honors and awards in academia over the last 10 years.

Please join us in welcoming Wonmin Sohn to Michigan State University and the School of Planning, Design and Construction!
