This year, Professor Matt Syal, PhD, in the Construction Management Program at the MSU School of Planning, Design and Construction, was honored with two awards: The Exemplary/Outstanding Alumni Award by the Department of Building Engineering and Management at the School of Planning and Architecture in New Delhi, India; and the Outstanding Reviewer award from the Journal of Architectural Engineering by the American Society of Civil Engineers.

As a former alumni (Master’s degree in 1982) of the School of Planning and Architecture in New Delhi, India, Syal was nominated to receive the Exemplary/Outstanding Alumni Award. Every year, the School faculty accepts nominations and then decides upon the one person who they feel is most worthy and who has achieved great heights. Syal was chosen as the recipient for 2015.

Syal still maintain ties with his former School where he acts as a visiting professor and gives lectures there every year. He also serves as a co-advisor for one of the Department’s PhD students.

“For them to think of me that way is a great honor,” he said. “It is always a big deal to be recognized by your former department and university.”

The American Society of Civil Engineers is known to produce some of the top research journals in the world. Syal serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Architectural Engineering, and also serves as a reviewer. To be asked to be a reviewer and editorial board member for the Journal, one must be a respected and reputable reviewer, and a published researcher. Syal has published more than 100 refereed journal and conference papers, and more than 50 project reports/monographs. He has been involved in more than 50 research and outreach projects funded by industry, state and national government agencies, foundations and international agencies.

Every year, the Journal board selects the reviewer who has done the best and most thorough analysis of other researcher’s work. They selected Syal to receive the 2014 Outstanding Reviewer award for his efforts on behalf of the Journal.

Syal’s achievements not only show that he has a great dedication to his field of research, but also his dedication to education. Please join us in congratulating him for his accomplishments!
