Splish Splash Water Camp: Day 1

Water, water, everywhere

Splish Splash Water Camp: Day 1

Flag Ceremony & C.A.R.E.S.

Welcome to Splish Splash Water camp, where every day we do something related to water in every way, shape, and form! Today our campers met each other for the first time, so we all played a few games to get to know each other better. Afterward, we all as a camp did the flag ceremony, or the raising of the flag, and saying the Pledge of Allegiance. When that was finished, we all got together to learn about C.A.R.E.S. (Cooperation, Attitude, Respect, Empathy, and Safety) and how these values are super important to remember while doing activities this week. Now, let's see what we did this awesome first day of camp!

If you have ever been to Tollgate farms, it is super important to learn about each and every one of our animals that live here, one animal in particular that the campers go to see today, are our goats. These goats produce milk that allow us to make certain products, such as soaps, or even cheeses! Speaking of, our campers today got to learn how to milk the goats the proper way.

Rain GaugeIMG_5357

Since this is a week about water, and the fact that it will be raining multiple times this week, the campers went ahead to make rain gauges, that will collect rainwater and we can see how much rainfall we have in a single storm, by the inch! The campers also got to place their rain gauges throughout the farm, to see how different locations affect the amount of rain you collect.

IMG_5384Tie-Dye & Wagon Rides

Since it is the first day of camp, we follow a long and glorious tradition of tie-dyeing t-shirts that the campers will wear on Tie-Dye Friday! Each camper got to choose their own colors, as well as the way the t-shirt would be folded. It is recommended you keep the t-shirt soaked in the dye at least overnight before rinsing and washing.

Pancakes & PakorasIMG_5401

Our Garden Kitchen (aka Activity Center) is where we get to make two delicious recipes throughout the day, learning skills such as cutting fruits and vegetables. Today morning, we did make some delicious pancakes, with our special ingredient; Sweet Potatoes! Topped with our homemade Tollgate Farm Maple Syrup. In the afternoon, we made a very new dish, Asparagus Pakoras, a tasty snack with fresh Dill and a side of Lemon Dip.

IMG_5450Fishy Story

This is a story, about why it is so important to take care of our fresh water supply! This activity visualized what it looks like to see clear water be polluted by surrounding factors, such as syrups, plastic, grass, dirt, and so on. It was a great activity to learn observations skills and to visualize the pollution, to really make sense of what pollution does to water.

STEAM: Boat BuildingIMG_5431

This week's STEAM (Science, Technology, Environment and Math) Project is to build a boat! Not really build a boat, more like a model of a boat, using the tools we have at our disposal. Today our amazing Educational Leaders asked each of their groups to think about what goes into building a boat, and how you would go about creating such a structure. the campers were able to jot down notes and ideas that they can use for the rest of this week.
